A few years back we had a ref who was booking players for ANY chat to him. At first it seemed ridiculous and, to be fair, he was over the top but soon we were telling our own players to shut up as we knew he wouldn't stand for it.
The point is, although he took it to an extreme level, the player's soon policed it themselves and would be annoyed at their own teammate for stupidly getting booked when it was very clear the ref wouldn't stand for it.
It works.
Soon it becomes embarrassing to be the 'idiot' sent off for swearing at the ref when everyone knew what would happen.
