IMG_0106.JPGI have been commissioned to build a 1/350 scale hms Sutherland frigate for a colleague. Type 23

I have a kit of HMS Kent which is a similar class frigate.

Can you tell me if I build this to be in international waters, what flags are flown from the radar masts at sea. I know in port they tend to be the home country, with the Union Jack off the rear staff, but I have been asked to make it as accurate as possible, for Mediterranean service.

Thanks.

the White Ensign, no?

I wondered that, but some long shots I have seen two or three flags.

I know on cruise ships, there is the company pennant/ flag as well as others

All I can offer is the the white ensign at sea and port and the union flag at the pointy end when in in port, as far as the Ickle flags and pennants I was an RP so no clue!

white ensign definitely, and then additional flags will denote whether there is a high-ranking sailor on board - admiral, rear-admiral, commodore etc; plus signalling flags as necessary

Ahaaaa. That is brilliant. Cheers mate.

Will go back to the guy and see what he wants.

Thanks again.

White Ensign... You had a flag of choice when refuelling. We had two.. A huge Japanese Fishing Boat Flag (Very colourful) indicating Congratulations on your catch, and a Flying Fid astride a SeaDart Missile.

The Union flag is flown on the Jack staff hence being called the Union Jack. That is on the Bow of the ship, but only when alongside.
The White Ensign is flown at the rear (stern) of the ship at all times.
As for the smaller flags, you need to ask a Bunting (steady on Hampden Park )

Hampden, you were a sparker but did you learn anything about the flag waving?

"I have been commissioned to build a 1/350 scale hms Sutherland frigate for a colleague."

I think you should deliberately misunderstand the brief and build it full size like Tompkinson's icebreaker...
