I said it a few months ago and I'll say it again: in a few years, Curran will be seen as a batsman who bowls rather than a bowler who can bat

Is that a brilliant catch by Mathews or just a great effort??

Soft signal not out... fielder not sure...

Sri Lanka must be so pissed off at this, I know I am when it happens to us.

Very patient and good use of the review technology... looked like it might be given... and then the best angle came out... and it is not out... good work.

Gone this time... smashed to long off, no doubt with the catch.

Sam Curran 64 (119 balls, six sixes, 1 four) :clap2:

Partnership for the 10th wicket was 60 in 11 overs, Jimmy Anderson 7* (12 balls, 1 four).

England 285 all out.

285 All Out, 50 plus bonus runs from Curran.

Still a dozen overs to go in the day, can't see this one going the distance...

Bas: "To Jimmy, batting and bowling are the same thing. You do both in partnerships. In both, there is a striker and a preparer. Jimmy is brilliant at working in partnerships. In this batting innings, he got Curran on strike all the time and played second fiddle to him. That is brilliant test batsmanship. What a fantastic player Jimmy really is."

Wise words.

Leach to JK Silva, OUT, bowled him! That's a snorter from Leach, perfect line, perfect length, angled in from round the wicket, gripping the deck, straightening past the edge and into the top of off!

22-1 (8 overs)

a galaxy far far away
The value of late order runs, isn't so much the runs themselves it's the momentum they create. How often do you see the top order crumble in the 2nd innings after the tail has had a bit of fun in the first. Good to see us play well away at last

Bowling spin on a pitch like this - working on a plan - toying with the batsman - knowing one will grip once or twice an over - must be such incredible FUN.

Speaking as someone who has spent the last 35 years charging in on ever more worn knees and ankles, trying to bowl (increasing less) quickly. It looks much less EFFORT.

England now 290 (not 285) all out in first innings. 5 penalty runs added for short running by Roshen Silva
