Nice song, love the mandolin, but wtf has it got to do with Maidstone?

Absolutely nothing. Very much a throw away song, at a time when they had strong songs for their 1991 LP "Play"

I think Chris Difford thought it would be a nothing song, so couldn't be bothered. But you are right, the mandolin makes this song.

First single from the album that cemented R.E.M. in the big time but much overlooked following the release of Everybody Hurts, the track that turned a lot of people onto them. For me it's the best track on the album and I remember feeling disappointed with the rest of the album after hearing it as the pre-release single. Automatic for the People was a lot of people's first (and a lot of people's last) R.E.M. album, and I think was probably the last single they released that blew me away, having been a fan since '84. Great video too.
