Brighton & Hove Albion defensive duo Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy have both agreed new five-year contracts, extending their time at the club until June 2023.

Youth-team graduate Dunk has since gone onto make more than 200 appearances for the club, while Duffy arrived from Blackburn Rovers for a then club-record fee in August 2016.

Manager Chris Hughton said, “I am delighted for both Lewis and Shane. They have been terrific players for the club; helping us win promotion and establish ourselves in the Premier League last season.

“They have formed a very good central defensive partnership, and have played a really important role in what we’ve achieved.

“Both are vital members of the squad, and it’s very pleasing that they’ve committed their long-term futures to the club.”

Dunk made his Albion debut against MK Dons in May 2010, and was part of the squad that won that the League One title the following campaign.

The 26-year-old had a brief spell out on loan at Bristol City in 2013, but returned to become a mainstay in the side.

Duffy began his career as a youngster with Everton, where he made ten senior appearances. He made his Toffees debut in the Europa League against AEK Athens in December 2009.

After loan spells with Burnley, Scunthorpe United and Yeovil Town, he secured a permanent move to Blackburn in September 2014, playing 69 times and scoring seven goals ahead of his move to Albion.

He also has 21 caps for the Republic of Ireland, and was part of the squad that qualified for the knockout stages of Euro 2016.

As someone who wasn't Duffy's biggest fan, I'm actually delighted at this news.

I assume this is double edged ... better terms for the players so less chance of heads being turned and nailing them down means would take a much higher transfer fee to any club who does come in for either of them

Good move for all concerned , also probably ups the clubs wage limit a tad so gives a little more freedom when trying to sign new players

Assuming that he gets a wage rise every time Dunk must be on very good money now. Reminds me of the time when he broke into the team anda chap on the Lewes to Falmer train said he was his uncle and that he knew that he was on less than £1k per week. How times change.

Cracking news. These two are our rocks at the back, though I certainly rate Balogun as a back up.

Yes, Dunk does seem to get more upgrades than my old mobile phone deals when Nokias were still a thing, but hardly undeserved. Much better to pay him a bit more and keep him here than lose him cheaply.

Duffy, meanwhile, has been immense this season.

George Barker and Lewis Dunk came through the ranks in the same scholar year. At their Old Bailey trial in January 2013, it was reported that Barker (at the time of the incident which was July 2011) was earning £350 per week. As both he and Dunk signed initial two-year contracts in the summer of 2010, there would be little reason to think that Dunk wasn't on a similar wage.
