Tricky one. Can only offer up these two classics from the olden days...

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing 'Galway Bay'...

You've actually got a double there. It also has "And then he sang a song: 'The Rare Old Mountain Dew'"

What about 'Rip It Up' referencing Buzzcocks?: "And my favourite song's entitled 'Boredom'" Good choice Edwin.

'Bohemian Rhapsody' - a No.1 single from 1975/76, mentions the song which replaced it at No.1 ("Mamma Mia" by Abba) AND a No.1 single of two years later ("Figaro" by Brotherhood of Man), as well as a US-only hit for Bobby Sherman ("Easy Come, Easy Go").

That is quite clever

This starts with the line: "As Nat King Cole sings 'Welcome to My World' you request some song you hate you sentimental fool'"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOs7DD0znPM

Weirdly I can't find any reference to a recording of Nat Cole singing 'Welcome To My World'. Elvis Presley yes, Dean Martin also, Jim Reeves obviously, but not Nat. He had a song called 'Welcome to The Club.' It's clear from Costello's book that he has a fairly encyclopedic knowledge of songs of this era because of his dad's career, so I would be surprised if he has this wrong.

Also did Welcome to my dreams, which still isn't welcome to my world.

Right, I've left it long enough. Time for the Joyless list of loads of them:

If you want references to other songs, you want indie pop, where all the music obsessives are:

Twa Toots 'Please Don't Play A Rainy Night In Georgia'

Camera Obscura - 'Lloyd I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken'

Pooh Sticks - 'On Tape' Mentions Orange Juice's 'Falling & Laughing'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b2MaOG2Vj8

Happy Mondays - Lazyitis - David Essex's 'We're gonna Make You A Star'
