I was looking for a thread for this yesterday. Gotta be one of the best TV ads ever, including all the 80s classics and Guinness campaigns. Had no idea what it was for, brilliant

Soooooo heartwarming. Once again, John Lewis hits it out of the park with lots and lots of cute kids in a HUGE big budget production. Wow, I feel so warm and fuzzy, its just like Christmas...but in SEPTEMBER !! ....oh...hang on...

John Lewis has revealed plans to axe around 200 roles , less than a day after the firm changed its name to put its staff “at the heart” of its business.

The department store chain has proposed cutting around 200 back office roles from within its organisation, with reports claiming that IT, finance, and store security staff will be affected.

The John Lewis Partnership - which also includes Waitrose - officially rebranded yesterday, changing its name to John Lewis & Partners.

The name change was designed to emphasise the company’s focus on its staff, who are called “partners” internally. The company added that the cuts were being made across its estate of stores, meaning staff in Newcastle could be affected. While 200 staff members will be made redundant as part of the restructure, John Lewis plans to create around 70 new roles as part of the changes.

Oh. Well, thats a bit shit.

Oh. Well, thats a bit shit.

200 out of nearly 40,000 isn’t close to being shit....obviously crap for those involved but in the great scheme of things barely registers.

Hold you tongue. Let your fingers do the talking.

Ok, here goes...

John Lewis is a SHOP that wants nothing more than to sell lots of STUFF to as many people as possible over Christmas in order to makes piles of money. They have cynically wheedled their way into the national psych by creating expensive, well made, often very imaginative commercials to get people’s money spending juices going, and which a lot of people now consider to be an absolutely intrinsic part of Christmas (in September, grrr). It is the absolute peak of the corruption and commercialisation of Christmas. Christmas (to me) should be something joyful, magical, spiritual, but it’s depressing to see how year on year it is bringing untold misery on families who simply can’t afford it.

I particularly didn’t like this advert because:

Cutesy children;
Dewey eyed parents;
Lyric change to “Mama just killed a man (Martian), held a gun (taser) against his head, pulled the trigger now he’s dead (‘No, I’m not!’)” - let’s not frighten the children with scary lyrics.
And I CAN’T STAND bloody Queen.

There. I’ve said it. Now I’m going to go and hide under the bed.

Queen are pretty good.
Everything else you’ve said there - bang on.
Maybe if they put some of their tv commercial budget into reducing prices on the shop floor they’d do better than they have been.
John Lewis rely on old people, who aren’t familiar with amazon, buying their over expensive products. That their ‘never knowingly undersold ‘ policy doesn’t apply to online retail, says it all.
That shop is Cynical commercialism and greed dressed as ‘we care’. They don’t care. They just want a lot of your money.
Oh, and that they are trying to make that ‘love actually’ version of Britain their own, actually makes me feel a bit sick. ‘John Lewis advert is part of Christmas ‘ - uuurrrggghhh.
