On win days, pay days and bonus days, all the stable staff would go out on the sauce and monopolise certain pubs in the (small) centre of town. At chucking out time there would invariably be fighting, puking and all the other lovely side effects that usually come with living in a much larger town or city. Stable staff easily outnumbered locals, partially because there were so many of them, but also because most locals just didn't want the hassle. It ruined the town centre.
The stable was a very insular place with lots of internal conflict and its own distorted code of conduct - there were a lot of scores settled on those nights.
Next time you go, try Nunnington Farm, on the road into WW coming from Itchenor. Much nicer.
