What did he bring to the side?

What's his injury?

He got clobbered in the ribs against Columbia, and was holding them for quite a while afterwards during the game. They hurt, and even if only bruised, ribs take ages to improve. Not necessarily an 'injury' as such, but something that slows your movement slightly, and can just deter you from going in and driving forward and so on. I reckon he was hurt, but okay to play - but below the levels he would have been if fully fit.

One feature of this tournament is the amount of people who claim that they have suddenly discovered football and are right behind England. One wonders if they would have been so enthusiastic had we failed to progress out of our group. The sickening beer-soaked hysteria that we had to witness every time England scored was naturally followed by deep despondency and tears, once the dream started to unravel.
The experienced football fan avoids such extremes and expects a mixture of joy and disappointment and refrains from getting too carried away. Those persistently indulging in " football's coming home " gave themselves away.
