why do they insist on referreing to money as "resources" and they also need to manage the 'resources' they get at the moment a bit better.

Most were petrified of losing their jobs, because they would lose on the job health insurance for them, and in a lot of cases their families. Some had had vital medicine removed from their plans, because of cost and had to supplement it with their own money, leaving them with horrific debt. They were the luckier ones, some didn’t even have basic cover, leaving them at the mercy of any serious illness. One lady spoke of a son who had suffered cancer, gone into debt to have it cured, then fell into depression and committed suicide all because of the financial burden and seeing no way out.
It really brought home what a blessing the NHS is for those ordinary people, not rich, who don’t have the terrible financial burden as well as illness to worry about

I thought I would bounce this thread to show my personal appreciation of our NHS.
Over last weekend Mrs LLF was complaining of an earache, not terrible pain but enough for her to consider a visit to the GP on Monday. Anyway, Monday arrived and the pain had receded a bit so she thought see what it was like Tuesday, as she appreciates how hard pressed the NHS is.
Tuesday morning, great, no pain and her hearing had improved, so she came to work with me, we work together, on the proviso that if she felt I’ll during the day we would pack up early and come home. To cut a long story short, by lunchtime she was complaining of the worst headache she had ever had, so, we came home, where she promptly fell asleep on the sofa. She woke a couple of times during the afternoon, was sick once but, slept for about 4 hours. At 6, I tried to rouse her for some dinner, I couldn’t wake her. I called an ambulance, which arrived in about 10 minutes, they immediately blue lighted her to Worthing hospital. By the time I arrived, no more than 10 minutes after the ambulance, they already had her on an antibiotic IV. By 8 she had, had a Ct scan and chest X-ray.
An ITU doctor arrived at 8.20ish and told me my wife had meningitis. To say I was shocked was an understatement, I thought only young people got it.
They transferred her to ITU where she spent 3 days being pumped full of antibiotics. She is now in a general ward, and is well on the way to recovery.
The doctor had told her if we had stuck to our original plan, and she had had an early night Tuesday and gone to the GP Wednesday morning, she wouldn’t be here now.
My admiration and appreciation of our NHS grows with each medical crisis my family has.
Why are we allowing this Government to even consider of selling more of it off to the private sector.

There are issues with “entry” into the NHS (GP or A&E) but as I’ve unfortunately had experience of (not personally, thank goodness), when you see specialists once you’re in the system they’re invariably fantastic.
I’ve recently had two separate occasions to need the NHS, one identified a minor stroke from a simple scan that turned into a 7 hour stay (and strong drugs to take home), the second (a week later) identified the need for completely unrelated emergency surgery and a ten day stay (and even more drugs).
The people and the “services” were all magnificent. I hated every moment of the ten day stay - and my admiration and thanks to everyone knows no bounds. A wonderful institution that needs emergency surgery.

I think it might be referring to the duplication of effort, the order of priorities and poor choices being made in purchasing drugs, infrastructure and equipment. I suspect the number of fingers in the pie might have something to do with it.
It's not as simple as selling it off is it? Work has been tendered for decades, including under Labour, so that's not new with this government.
What people like most about the NHS (I think) is that it's free at the point of access. I'm not sure they care too much whether the person treating them works for the NHS or a private company that had won the bid for the work (obviously the overall bid, not on a per patient basis).
I think there is a danger that as more bids are won by private companies, the strength of the NHS will diminish, and we'll end up in a worse state.

But it is a slippery slope. That, and continuing to allow taxpayer-trained and NHS-employed medics to moonlight in private clinics (see posts passim), is bleeding the lifeblood out of the NHS.
The process of negative feedback is in place, with staff shortages, a sense among staff that nobody cares, and a sense among a cohort who work in the NHS who (perfectly reasonably - it is part of the human spectrum) are not wedded to the red tooth and claw of socialism thinking 'f*** this, I can earn better elsewhere', all contributing to the crisis.
And those among the Tories who want the NHS properly privatized are rubbing their hands. All you need to do is neglect a lovely houseplant, and it will die.
