I think the big moment was when Trippier took his and put it away so well. He has been our man of the tournament for me.
Agreed. Trippier has been excellent all tournament and you are right about that penalty - nicely taken, arguably under more pressure than anyone up to that point.

Yep I thought we were gone when the equaliser went in.

I went and stood in the hallway for Dier's spot kick, stupid really, still had a good view of the telly.

We have to do it all again on Saturday, I can't wait.

When we went to pieces in the first period of extra time I thought we were heading out and would of taken penalties if offered.

2nd half ET we got our heads back so I knew we went into the penalties not as broken as we looked to be at the start of ET. Hoped this would count.

Was expecting us to miss every time. Then when Henderson started poncing about with the ball on the walk up and Tydsley did his trademark Jinxing , knew would miss !

Then assumed we were out , went from swearing and cussing to thoughtful silence. All those previous exits the hurt was there as raw as ever and I was pissed off I'd emotionally got so involved AGAIN.

Then the one off the bar gave hope and back on feet daring to dream it isn't over.

After that it seemed to whizz by and felt confident once Dier was running up .

Then followed absolute bedlam in the house. Neighbours for several doors down must be thinking WTF.

Couldn't sleep for hours.

Roll on Saturday . Potential to be one of the best days of the year.

Not me. I thought the Colombian would hit the wood work with the very next spot kick, and that Trippier would haul us level. I also predicted Pickford would save the next one after that one-handed and that Dier would stroke home the winning penalty for England.

So you see, even once Henderson had his pen saved, I knew we'd be fine and I was proven correct as always. Hope this helps.

My other half will confirm (and I know everyone will say, oh well he would) that I shouted hit the bar just before the Colombian did just that (remember Swindon at Withdean), and then said Pickford would save one, and then said Dier would go left corner.

Delighted to be right, even though I scared the cat who wouldn't come in from the garden for over an hour.

I didn't watch either period of extra time or the penalties.
There is a Spanish family a few houses up the road and I sat with the tv turned off refreshing the match thread every minute or so after I'd heard them cheer.
I had no idea who they would be supporting and had to wait for the "never doubted it" post on here before I turned the telly back on. Get in!!

When they equalised and normal time was over I went to the bar at the place where I was watching and didn't see any of the extra time as I thought it would end up as the score 2 - 1 to Columbia.
Went back to the huge screens where at least 2000 people were watching and watch the penalty shoot out through my fingers.
The place erupted when we were through, the plastic drinking beakers and loads of other stuff was tossed into the air and the song Three Lions was heard everywhere.
Most England supporters were shaking the hands of Colombian supporters as they left, which was a nice touch.

The thing is (for me) that England were comfortable all the way until added time in the 90 minutes by which time substitutions had been made to see out the game. Colombia pushed harder in added time than they ever did in normal time and got lucky. The changes to the line-up ensured that England's attacking threat was dulled in Extra Time. Once Southgate put Rashford on England got more of a threat and Colombia seemed happy to go to penalties. The only time England looked really vulnerable was when Walker lost possession or was struggling with cramp. Technically Colombia have some fine players and can counter-attack beautiffuly but they chose yesterday to resort to the dark arts. I am so glad for football's sake that they failed

It made me angry even back then. Idiot pundits would 'explain' that there was no point as you couldn't re-create the pressure. ****ing idiots. When golfers try and knock in the winning put for the Ryder cup, there's a ton of pressure on them - does that mean they don't ****ing practice putting?

They develop ways of adding pressure to their training. And obviously that can be done with football too. And the practising should come at the end of a tiring training session (which thankfully it now does).

Couldn't agree more. You need to be confident in pressure situations. You can get that confidence from knowing that you have practised lots of penalties and know what you are doing.

I knew Henderson wasn't going to score when he ball-juggled to the penalty spot, a sure sign of nerves... I was more surprised when the Colombian chap who came next clobbered the bar!
so did i.
watch a replay of the pen, the keeper new which way he was going, was alredy very slightly tilted that way and more over that side of the goal. Also the way Henderson set up for the pen he cud really only put it the side he went.

Yes. And I was surprisingly calm about it. I just thought "Ah well, here we go again." My only regret was that we were about to lose to a team of cheating thugs rather than to a decent side. Decent in the sporting sense that is, I accept they were a decent team football-wise.

Yes

But I had already 'made peace' with us going out when they equalised ... I was actually a little bit annoyed at their chap for hitting the bar. "don't make me believe" ...

Yeah me too. Especially when he hit the bar. I did cheer, but part of me thought "Oh don't drag it out, don't give me hope, finish it now."

i thought it was the most "niggly" game of the tournament so far and it was a shame we were involved in it......the hassling of the ref was embarrassing in the extreme and not a good advert for the game at all.

I thought the game was up when Sterling was rugby tackled and the Columbian stayed on the pitch!

When Henderson missed I did not think we were out.
But I did say if the next guy scores we are, thankfully he smashed it against the bar :)
2 goals down playing catch up would have been too much
