Do you not lay some of the blame at the antics of the players ? Almost to a man they were determined to cheat and fake their way around the pitch with varying degrees of snidery. With the ref having a hugely flaky VAR in his earhole as well, I had to have some sympathy with him, it was a pig of a game to referee. It doesn't justify the worst decision of the lot with that pen at the end, and you're right, he probably won't see the last 16. But by christ I don't envy them, trying to run the rule over the fakers and shysters who have festooned this group stage with their screaming histrionics.

Good post.

4 teams and managers, almost unmanageable last night.

Can we just nail this down once and for all. The referee CANNOT ASK FOR A VAR REVIEW. He referees the game "as normal", makes all his calls, all his decisions as he normally would during the game, but only gets contacted by the VAR if the bloke in front of a monitor thinks he's missed something, or has dropped a bollock on a call and thinks he needs to review it. Its still ultimately the refs decision on whether he changes his original call, but what he can't do is ask the VAR what he should do.

Now. Tonights game was clearly the most farcical VAR game we have had so far. Several massive delays on some highly marginal calls, when its only supposed to be the 'clear and obvious' stuff, or so we're told, and ultimately, in the end, a truly dreadful penalty decision that has now fundamentally altered the path of the World Cup (and was also a gnats chuff away from getting Portugal knocked out).

Its got a lot of stuff right so far in this tournament, but the chickens certainly came home to roost in this game. Just wait for the knockouts. There is going to be at least one almighty great VARS horlicks that directly results in someone going home. Its in the post, mark my words.

VAR Advice: The referee can seek factual advice from VAR, including whether there was an offside position leading up to a goal, or if the ball was out of play. Regarding penalty decisions, VAR can also advise on whether the foul was committed inside or outside the area, whether the ball was out of play leading up to the penalty, or whether there was an offside in the build-up. All cases of mistaken identity will require VAR Advice.

Factual advice only as your paragraph explains, not incidents which are down to interpretation. And he doesn't ask for it - all of those things are automatically checked and won't result in the ref going to the side of the pitch to have another look. He will be told if a goal is offside, for example, and rule it out there and then. The ref can't ask if there was a foul or a handball - he's only told if he's potentially made a clear and obvious error.
