A few years ago me and a mate spent 10 minutes trying to kill one by stamping on it before we accepted defeat.

the village I lived in France a man in his 80s was killed by hornets
a regular problem in the summer
my neighbour had a nest in their hedge and while the fire brigade dealt with it,we were advised to stay indoors for at least 4 hours
apparently they are attracted by meat and not sugar
