Is that right? I don't think I've ever met any of the people who live there. I'm not even sure the flats were built when I left Saltdean. I preferred it when it was butlins/the grand ocean as it was a great free facility for us kids to walk in off the street and use.

As for the gift shop...I've not been in there since about 1990. I can't lie, I'm a little sad it isn't the inspiration for Little Britain. Bloody Rottingdean.

Hahahahaha yeah there are plenty of shops in saltdean that could be spoofed anyway so all is not lost. A rich comedy seam to mine.....

If you are looking for a flat that is likely to increase in value over the next few years - the areas that have increased the most are central Hove and central Brighton. Personally I wouldn’t buy in any other area. Although avoid west st area in Brighton or any of the roads off st James st in Brighton.

Central Brighton is much younger and noisier than central Hove which is more middle class, more sophisticated and a bit older

I’m 55 in two years time and looking to slow down a bit , so looking to sell the house I’m renovating and use the money to buy a flat in the area so I can spend a bit more time down south, especially during the football season.
When not using it , family and friends can use it and maybe rent it out. Would definitely prefer two beds as I have grandchildren and preferably not too far from the seafront.
Is it worth looking further out Worthing, Peacehaven etc?

Not sure how old your grandchilren are but something to consider is Worthing and Peacehaven might not be as attractive to them as Brighton now or in the future.

try seaford would get a nice place for that money and 30 mins train ride to brighton and good for home games as you get a seat

I would certainly try and buy in Brighton and Hove- even if it means stretching yourself. Mortgage rates are the lowest they will be so act fast to grab a decent deal. My only reservation with flats is the maintenance feeswhich you can’t really avoid. You end up paying someone to oversee the property and an accountant. Unexpected building costs. If you are a ground floor flat and the roof needs doing then you will pay a proportion. Did piss me off the times I had a flat.

I don't know what your budget is but 300k will still just about get you something half decent in Saltdean. It blows my mind how expensive the place is becoming.

Sorry you are correct. £300k in Saltdean will definitely get a decent size flat or 2 bed house in Saltdean. I was thinking of my own budget, which would be probably £250-£260k max, keeping me in TC for the foreseeable.

Any opinions on Shoreham?

Really want to move out of Crawley, and Shoreham seems another alternative to Brighton. Get a bit more for your money, by the sea and nice countryside, pubs etc.

St James st is ok in the day but at night attracts a lot of drunks and beggars and druggies, the police are called out every night to something dodgy happening along that road, it is a long road . You can often hear the noise from the roads directly off it and the drunks sometimes walk down from st James st onto the streets directly off and use the front porches of the houses as toilets . So that’s why I would never buy a property around there .

This reminds me of when I was looking to share a flat (renting) with a mate soon after I’d left home. I found myself in a local letting agent that I will call “Leaders”.

Us: we’d like a 2 bed flat please. Anywhere in Brighton except near St James’s St

Them: certainly!

We were then taken to a 1 bed place with an additional store cupboard one street off St Jimmy’s.

Thanks..........I'd guess that car parking would be pretty much impossible as well.

That said, if i felt secure & was on the 1st floor or above, i'd not be bothered by street noise, but I can understand it putting plenty of people off, especially families.

On the plus side :), do the drawbacks to the area make the flats more affordable ?

lots of new flats being built in Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill.

And on the coast road in Peacehaven. The windows look as though they're made of single sheets of plastic, the plastic wood frontage IS made of plastic, the soundproofing will be non-existent, they will cost a fortune and they'll all be snapped up within weeks. Bring back the Victorians I say.

For what budget in Shoreham? True it's very nice and is about to see a river-front revamp. Most of the residential area around me are big houses (4-bed plus) I was lucky to get a small place in a nice area in 1999. The new flats being built where Parcelforce was based are going to be from £280k upwards so I hear but that will be only a few of those being sold. Ropetackle is also expensive. 7 new waterfront townhouses sold for £900k each two years ago. The town seems to be taking off of late with lots of work going on. We are not short of a decent pub or restaurant and the place is really pleasant to live in. I feel completely safe here and can't see myself leaving.
Two small refurbished 2-bed houses in the town centre were recently for sale for £460-470k just to give you an idea. Along Middle Road heading towards Southwick, and up towards Southlands Hospital things should get a bit cheaper but that is mainly bungalows.
