If we were looking at back up keepers I'd go for Westwood from Sheffield Wednesday. Believe he's out of contract next year, and has always looked fairly solid against us, but not sure he'd count as a home grown player?

Maenpaa more likely to stay than Krul...

but...

"However, recruitment this summer will take place with an eye on the balance of home grown and foreign players."

Maenpaa's albion future may well depend on whether or not Baldock stays or is replaced by a non-HGP.

We are offering Maenpaa a new contract, according to the club site.

There is clearly a difference in the contract status of Maenpaa and Krul. The just-published retain list and free transfer list show that Maenpaa's contract has been "Extended", similar to the likes of Bjordal, Hall and Collings. In other words, Albion held an option which has been exercised:-

On the other hand, Krul is shown in the Free Transfer list. There was no club option in his contract; it is now down to negotiations to determine whether Krul stays. (Of course, if Maenpaa was determined to move on this summer, I'm sure the club wouldn't want to hang on to an unhappy player, but they would be able to hold out for a fee if they wanted to).

The exact wording from the club. Who am I to argue?

Meanwhile, the club will now open negotiations with Maenpaa regarding a new deal to extend his stay with Albion.

yes he's from manchester so he would. and i think this would be a very good option though im not sure he'd be satisfied with playing time. i'm honestly astounded by us supposedly being after such an average keeper like button, but i've learned my lesson of mistrusting the recruitment team from when we signed duffy

Maybe that is for a new 2 year deal ? His option / extension is 1 year ?

We never really know too many details. I only learnt today that Richie Towell's last new contract has a further year option on top of the 2 years announced last summer.

I assume one of the main reasons for inserting these option clauses is to help the club protect its "asset". For instance, the same retain list shows goalkeeper Bailey Vose as having his contract "Extended" (ie the club took up their option) but he has recently been sold to Colchester United. A similar thing happened with Ben Dickenson four years ago: the club exercised their option and then sold him to Gillingham. I would imagine the option that Towell mentions is in the club's favour, rather than his.

I prefer my goalkeepers and indeed players to be hairsuite in some fashion. I don’t want a ‘keeper who looks like a cue ball wearing a green sweater, I want hair. Bruno has managed to overcome his bic level baldness by growing his now legendary thatch of a beard... if he wants in, he needs a decent wig, weave or transplant. I would support a joke shop Afro of some sort, or I would possibly accept a decent 1980s beard. At 4 million (wtf?) I simply can’t accept his lack of hair.

Kosh; this sounds like a bit of an odd angle?!? Well; the evidence is there for all to see... good keepers have hair, great beards and/or (back when it meant more than Movember) a good old Lee Van Cleef.

Here is my XI of great keepers with (or perhaps who had) a decent amount of rock God potential:

Higuita - extra point for the tash.
Banks - nice side parting.
Digweed - silver fox.
Michel Preud'homme - euro mullet.
Schmeichel the 1st and 2nd. Hair from the realm of Asgard.
Jorge Campos - luxurious.
Mark Ormerod - 90s curtains.
Ben Roberts - Indie borderline weller mullet.
Kim Byung-Ji - oh yes.
Peter Bonetti - pornstar.

I could go on...

It’s a no from me.

I believe Button would be a competant back up to Ryan but I am not so sure about the price as it seems excessive to me and I would have thought that there would have been an older experienced keeper available to be no 2 who would be cheaper.

Cheaper? I'd be very surprised if Button feels entitled to £100K plus per week.

I was just following BG’s completely logical train of thought! [emoji6]

That said, I do think £4m for Button would be silly money...
