On the day the world cup squad is announced, another one of our 1966 world cup winners passes away. RIP.

A very good left back in his day but sadly along with George Cohen was the start of full backs getting forward and forgetting their main job to defend None the less he was a very competent full back and quite quick.

RIP.

Excellent. One of a select few Englishmen to have had his hands on the World Cup trophy, a feat unlikely to be equalled any time soon (if ever), and BensGrandad chooses the day of his death to pass judgement on his lack of defending skills. Tremendous scenes.

Tremendous, BG. Just tremendous.

A fitting tribute for his headstone BG.

I was not bemoaning his defending skills in fact the exact opposite . Both him and Cohen were able to do that as they were both exceptional but since they did itevery full back thinks they are the same and can do it, which sadly most can't. My most sincere apologies if it came across wrong.but at no time did I say he was poor at defending.

Can't wait for BG's 'tributes' for the other WC winners.

Nobby Stiles - competent midfielder but couldn't look after his teeth. Geoff Hurst: could score goals but a lousy cricketer; Bobby Charlton: decent left foot but terrible hair. ...The mind boggles.

Ray Wilson was a classy defender (and he could defend no matter what BG says). Didn't he become an undertaker after his career was over?

It's sad to see another footballer stricken with Alzheimers though. RIP Ray

Hope you don't get the same treatment when your turn comes, BG...

....a much loved former publican, football scout and family man, but frequently tended to display a complete absence of compassion or self-awareness on popular football forum, NorthStandChat.

RIP.I'm sure BG meant no disrespect.I'm afraid,at our age, death becomes a bit commonplace.Ray very much the forgotten man of 1966.

As others have agreed he was a very good full back and it is a pity others since do not have his ability when copying his style. One of our two best ever left backs.

Geoff Hurst......... good striker of a ball but tended to hit the bar too often and carried on playing when spectators ran on the pitch.

BG could have probably phrased it better, but he's been complimentary and probably doesn't deserve the excessive sarcasm.

And, unlike many of us on here, he is actually old enough to have seen Wilson play.

No-one's above criticism in football, even World Cup winners.

It's always been a game of opinions.

The saddest thing is that the likes of Wilson, Peters and Stiles had/have ever-decreasing memories of England's greatest day due to dementia.

That's much more insensitive.

Jimmy Langley was doing that in the 50s,firstly for us, then continued at Fulham.
