They may have contributed but it was Liverpool that got our clubs banned from European competition for a number of years, at a time when we were the dominant force. It could be argued that we have never fully recovered from that period in the wilderness.

I personally couldn't give a toss what nationality the club is. Being an Albion fan, I usually support the underdog in all competitions.

I don't understand this patriotic crap involved in club football. I would love to see someone like Braga or Celtic beat Barcelona or Man United.

It's a shame the Roma fans were allowed to attack Liverpool fans with weapons directly outside of the stadium.
I hope the Liverpool fan from Ireland makes a full recovery.

But I'm not sure why the Roma fans were not rounded up earlier in the day and given an escort to Anfield.
I did see a video of the police chasing them away from what looked like a city centre pub after trouble.
Didn't see any police in the 2 videos I saw of Roma fans attacking Liverpool fans outside Anfield.

Now where were the police?

The previous post just goes to show how “exuberance” against police warnings might have impacts further down the line. The police and club request no flares (not in the fashion sense!) or fireworks. This is ignored as fun and games, it gets out of hand and occupies police resources, then more serious incidents elsewhere aren’t policed.

Damned by faint praise indeed. The incident with the coach against city was awful and rightly highlighted on that thread but you couldn't wait to pour opprobrium against Liverpool's fans on an incident where a poor bystander appears to have been set upon for no fault of his own. Life is rarely as black and white as your posts about fans make out. The vast majority of Liverpool's people are decent but some on this thread seem to believe the whole city is a vast seething lake of anger and discontent. It is a great shame.

They're widespread now, not just by the much NSC-discussed Palace and Liverpool. In recent weeks I've seen used flares used frequently at Wolves, ManC and german matches. They used to be just a continental phenomenon. Clubs and the police have made it plain that it's a criminal offence, but I'd say their use is growing. A personal view, I'm not so sure they're such as awful thing. Why are so many other countries on the continent relaxed about their use?

The use of bottles, hammers, knives and belts is a totally different thing. Last summer in Marseilles people were left brain damaged without a flare in sight, last night's planned assault on the 53 year old was witnessed by independent football writers, and no doubt this summer some English/German/Poland supporters are going to get very seriously hurt by organised thugs.

Flares are a tiny side issue, compared to unchecked thuggery still prevalent across Europe.

Virtually every football chant stems from another song. He can't comprehend that and simply lacks the knowledge. The Everton Song is based on Celtic's Grand Old Team, and why the hell did Brighton fans sing Going Down The Shoreham Road when it was Newcastle's Blaydon Races song?

It's all part of his unthought out keyboard warrior trolling of all things Liverpool.

Flares/smoke are not only dangerous, more so when thrown, but also hide the identities of those around them who may be fighting or throwing bottles.

Just as an aside, I went to a Champions League game in Italy a few years back when I was skiing. Our coach turned up but couldn’t find the entrance and stopped in the middle of the street. The driver told us to get off and walk.

The police were on us within seconds. And the words they used were along the lines of “get back on the coach and we’ll direct you to the coach park, because if you don’t, and if you decide to walk, they will find you and you will get seriously hurt”.

It seems even they’re aware just how bad the violence can be from their own fans.
