A few thoughts

What with Easter and the two next month that would be 7 in spring, 4 in winter and 1 in 'Summer'.

Seems silly.

Having the Patron saint days fixed could just result in 4 midweek days off at dull times of year.

Seems silly.

4 more national holidays

Good idea

But have them on Fridays in June, July, September and October and theme them as sports, arts, harvest and some sort of patriotic blocks day.

Better idea

OR theme them by different alcoholic drinks?

June could be Pimms Day, July Gin & Tonic, August could be Prosecco and September Cider?

popularist nonsense and overlooks the Scots, Irish and Welsh already have days off for their saints. so what he means is, English should have 23rd April off but didn't want to say so because its not "inclusive", so ends up with 4 public holidays across all 4 nations.

I would move the first May bank holiday back to St Georges Day.

Then introduce one for Trafalgar Day in October. Spread them about a bit.

That's the spirit.

I mean, St George's day would have worked out all right this year as all the 'normal ' people could have had a couple more beers with a pub lunch yesterday and spent today pottering about. Next year, it's a Tuesday. Who the actual **** would want a Tuesday off?

Another vote for Trafalgar Day. Complete with a drop of rum to celebrate.

Will it be 4 extra holidays, or effectively only 1.

I can see the 4 days being introduced, but St George only being a holiday in England, St David only being a holiday in Wales......

I won't get too excited just yet

Scots and Irish get a day off but Wales doesn't

Bang one in for mid summer, that Friday off would make it easier for all the letting agents and junior accountants to go to Glastonbury.

I like that the Scots don't bother with Easter Monday but have Jan 2nd off.

Effectively a national hangover day.

We should have a VE Day holiday.

But that would upset the Hun and all the collaborators and Surrenderers around the continent.

We forget. The British Empire was dashed on the Rocks of Nazi Germany. And, if the empire had to end, there is no more worthy cause than the defeat of Nazism.

We were left Bankrupt and on our knees, in hock to the USA who would have let us go to the wall if the Japs had left off.

We then spent 60 years defending Europe from the Soviets while all others were able to rebuild their economies without having a huge standing Army in Germany.

No wonder were sick of Europe. We dig them out TWICE and get stuck with the bill.

The democratic and free EU
"With eight public holidays, the UK has the fewest of any G20 or EU country, Mr Corbyn will tell the annual conference of the Communication Workers Union in Bournemouth."

He can tell them that, but it would be very misleading. In the Netherlands we only get seven. On paper it looks like more, but they count Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday, both of which always (you'd never guess) fall on a Sunday. Moreover, unlike the UK we don't get Monday off in lieu when fixed date holidays fall at a weekend. That means in a "perfect storm" winter season when December 25 and Jan 1 fall on a Saturday and Boxing Day is a Sunday, that's 3 holidays straight out of the window and tough titty.

Interesting. This suggests there are more than that?
