So the whole thing is fake is it? I understand the propaganda machine that is the Wahhabi machine but there is little to suggest this is part of that.

I don't know if it is a false claim or fake footage, but there has been fake rebel footage used before in this conflict and the only reports of CW they have currently are from Assad's enemies.

The OPCW arrived in Damascus today and they are on their way to Douma to carry out an independent inspection and to gather information from all available sources for analysis. So maybe firing over 100 cruise missiles into Syria was premature? Also bearing in mind that one of the three targets was given a signed clean bill of health after inspection last year.

I would suggest that if the US intelligence identified three sites where they believe has a CW’s are made and stored, that it may have been a good idea to physically visit these places rather than waste 100 plus cruise missiles that would destroy all the evidence of CW’s being there, if they were?

The only good thing about the missile strike is that they were careful not to kill anyone, but a physical inspection would have been a rational option surely? and if they found CW’s there then they would have known if the Syrian government are culpable in using them.

Apologists for Assad working in British universities

Senior British academics are spreading pro-Assad disinformation and conspiracy theories promoted by Russia, The Times can reveal.

They are founders of a self-styled Working Group on Syria, Propaganda and Media (SPM) and hold posts at universities including Edinburgh, Sheffield and Leicester.

Members of the group, which includes four professors, have been spreading the slur, repeated by the Russian ambassador to Britain yesterday, that the White Helmets civilian volunteer force has fabricated video evidence of attacks by President Assad, who is backed by the Kremlin.

SPM’s advisers include an American who has challenged the US version of 9/11 as a conspiracy theory and an Australian who suggested that the CIA was behind last weekend’s chemical attack in Syria.

The White Helmets have attracted Russia’s ire for documenting the chemical attack on Khan Sheikhoun in April last year, which killed 83 people, a third of them children. Last September a UN unit found that “there are reasonable grounds to believe that Syrian forces dropped a bomb dispersing sarin” on Khan Sheikhoun.

how do you know there wasn't an unofficial physical visit?

I don’t think that any UN organisation can get anywhere in Syria without being accompanied with government protection without risking their lives. But if a request to immediately visit these targets was made, and was denied, it could be accepted that Assad had something to hide and legitimised a strike on them. Do you remember the intelligence claim that Saddam was using railway carriages as mobile chemical weapons labs in Iraq that turned out to be a fabrication?

As it stands with 35 cruise missiles obliterating each target it would have destroyed any evidence of chemical weapons factories and storage so we will never know the truth. Maybe that is convenient to the people making the claim?

Kofi Annan holds 'constructive' talks with Syria's Assad

BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-18764789

With his ceasefire in ruins, Mr Annan is now focusing on trying to win agreement on some kind of political transition, says the BBC's Jim Muir in neighbouring Lebanon.

The opposition insists any transition must include Mr Assad's departure from power, something he again ruled out in an interview with German television on Sunday.

"The biggest obstacle is that many countries do not even want this plan to succeed so they offer political support and continue to provide the terrorists in Syria with arms and money."

Bloody Russian propaganda being published by the BBC? It doesn't take a genius to understand Syria, or require the use of "conspiracy theories" over 6 years since after the fact. Anyone who believes that Assad should have stepped down and handed over his military and government to terrorists, has certainly got a screw loose or hasn't thought the consequences through, or is a bias Wahhabi/Salafi apologist.

hang on thats change of tack. now it has to be UN inspection, before it was simply physical visit. UN are not the sole resource available to check on the use of a building.

(AP) UNITED NATIONS - International envoy Kofi Annan blamed the failure of his peace plan primarily on the Syrian government Thursday and told the divided U.N. Security Council there must be "consequences" for those obstructing efforts to end the conflict.

Annan spoke amid more signs that diplomatic efforts to restore peace are floundering: U.N. observers came under fire Thursday as they tried to reach the site of the latest reported mass killing in Syria — about 80 people, including women and children who were shot or stabbed....The U.S. and its European allies have tried unsuccessfully for months to threaten sanctions against Syria as the death toll has risen. But Russia and China, Syria's main allies, vetoed two Security Council resolutions that threatened possible sanctions, and they indicated their continuing opposition in a joint statement after a summit in Beijing on Wednesday. The statement also opposed any outside military interference or forceful imposition of "regime change" in Syria.

Annan confirmed for the first time that Syria is not implementing his peace plan. He urged the council and the rest of the international community to unite and act immediately to intensify pressure, especially on President Bashar Assad's government.

Otherwise, he warned that Syria will likely face a future of "brutal repression, massacres, sectarian violence, and even all-out civil war" in which "all Syrians will lose."

Worthing
I listened to Lord Hill ( a past Chief of Defence staff)talking on the radio at lunchtime. He aired the view that it wouldn't be impossible for anti Assad forces to have waited for a Government helicopter to be dropping barrel bombs in their area, and then release chemical weapons knowing Assad would be blamed. They wouldn't care one iota about civilian casualties, and, the reaction of the allies against Assad would be worth it.
Lord Hill is most definitely not 'a Putin shill'

We've destroyed all the evidence of alleged chemical weapon factories and storage facilities now so we will never know for sure.

It seems that PM Theresa May has reportedly received intelligence Russia could hit members of the UK establishment with “kompromat” – compromising information that could smear their reputations..... As if the Russians have anything that COULD smear this lot any worse than they have smeared themselves ! :rotlf:

Not a problem if the kompromat is true - in fact it would be good if it is out in the open.
