People lie or deliberately don’t let the authorities know. Incredibly short sighted elderly drivers, refusing to wear glasses or contact lenses have been pulled up by coppers on TV police documentaries. Beggars belief the arrogance to be driving a 2 tonne missile, when only being able to see a few metres. The danger to pedestrians, kids, cyclists etc. For some reason it never gets publicity.

I knew someone who did this, it was out of vanity, not wanting those she knew to think of her as ‘4 eyes’!

I believe that form should be authenticated by somebody like a doctor or optician., When he was alive my father in law lived in Ferring near the village hall and could hardly see to sign the form and despite his children telling him he was wrong he scribbled his name on the form so that he could drive to the beach. His reasoning being that without that licence he was housebound. Purely on instinct he drove to the beach each day in his latter months. His children should have 'grassed; him up and they know that, but how do you do that to your dad.

As I walked into a car park back to my car I watched an elderly woman turn into the next space hitting my bumper, reversing and doing it again. when I approached she feigned surprise that she hit my car, twice. She didn't offer an apology or even look like she gave a shit. Her old female passenger was equally ignorant. Fortunately I am tolerant and my car had minor damage from a previous, possibly similar situation, so I let it go. Perhaps I am just a big Jessie

All such stats should be on a per mile driven basis. Clearly, the retired drive the fewest miles, not having to commute and some often feel nervous about long drives.

There are considerate drivers of all ages, inconsiderate drivers of all ages and totally crap drivers of all ages. Bad driving is by no means confined to the elderly. iIam an old git of 81 with never a point on my licence nor any driving offence conviction. Some of you young whippersnappers will doubtless say I have just been lucky. Perhaps I have, but 60 years of driving with a record like mine tends to show more than luck. Let him that is without sin cast the first stone.

On the subject of retests and eyesight this is my situation. About 3and a half yrs ago I developed a condition known as myasthenia gravis. It's where the eye muscles loose their ability to keep your eyelids up and the eye muscles that control your vision ( ie double vision ) . I had to inform the DVLA about my condition not my specialist as it would have been an invasion of my privacy. The DVLA replied asking me to refrain from driving until my condition improved. You couldn't make it up. As I'm 72 I have my licenced renewed every 3 yrs. I have to get my specialist to also say my sight is good enough to drive safely.

As you live in Sussex, you may already aware, especially the southcoast dwellings, are a homing beacon to all things of the silver brigade.
They park and drive how they like.
Take Bexhill for example, it's like Scalextric on slow motion.
Double yellows, no parking and junction corners are a speciality of theirs.
Whenever I'm down visiting family, I'll be travelling around, at about 30mph, and I think I'm speeding :laugh:

Inevitably I'll be of that ilk, but whilst I still have my marbles, I'll still moan about it :thumbsup:

That's because they dont drive more than 20 mph and make the driver's behind them get angry and have to over take.

Surprised you didn’t understand.

An insurance company and its underwriting for a driver in their 70’s or 80’s, bases their premium on that drivers history in recent years only. That history having a direct correlation back to their lack of miles and on average lower claims.

The fact that many years previous they commuted and drove far more miles in general, is irrelevant to their current insurance risk and insurance industry stats for their age group.

To be fair. I'd imagine that there are probably more male drivers on the road. Also, whilst men may be driving many miles, out earning a crust to look after the little lady at home, the lady driver usually only pops to the shop to make sure she has something nice for her hubby's tea, or to get her hair done or pick up a few cleaning items, so the two aren't really comparable.

Nothing to do with age but I think all drivers should take a retest after being banned and a simplified version at 70 years old. The problem is there would be an increase in unlicensed drivers on the road and subsequently uninsured.

They can try. With ANPR that’s a crushed car and a criminal conviction.

Re-test every driver every 10 years and if you fail, you have 3 months to re-take and pass before you lose your licence.

Every 5 years after 65.

Every 3 years after 80.

Employ more examiners paying more tax and generating more income to fix the f***ing potholes.

And put even more pressure on the driving test centres who are no doubt still playing catch up with the cancelled due to the snow and ice. Surely the answer would be for an independent assessment by agency set up by the DVLA and insurance companies akin to the TV show 100yr old drivers.
