How far will they have to go to reach their level based on current squad performance

"Great club"? You hear that a lot, Leeds being another prime example, why? Based on what?

To be fair, Sunderland have got a great history. Only five clubs have won the top division more times and have spent just 26 years of their 120 year history in the lower divisions. They've got much of a claim to be a big club than Leeds (or Newcastle for that matter)

Yet I remember how everyone cheered Bob Stokoe when little Sunderland beat mighty Leeds in the FA cup final.

That's because pretty much everyone outside the city hated Leeds (and because Sunderland were in the 2nd division at the time). Stokoe was also a bit of a character, well liked by pretty much everybody.

Sunderland have been down there with us in the late eighties........to be fair, they've spent longer in the top flight than we have since then.
