Youth Hostel in a small Australian town. I was the only person staying there. In walks this guy I knew from my Sussex local. A few minutes later 2 English girls arrive, one of whom had recently been sharing a flat in London with a Girl I was friends with at school.

Couple of coincidences:

When on holiday at Pontin's, Brean Sands, circa 1975 ish, we came out of our shed (chalet) to see the family that lived just down the road from us, their Daughter was two years older, around 15-16 and it took her all of two hours to let me know we weren't going to be "holiday friends"!

When in the Army on Guard Duty, aged 19, in Aldershot I was tasked with escorting some workmen who had to repair the TV Ariel, one of the guys turned out to be a good mate of mine from Horsham.

Sat in the Airport in Coff's Harbour, NSW, (which was, at that time very small) a bloke and his Wife, who I found out came from Shoreham, came rushing over to talk to me convinced they knew me. We sat for over two hours talking about shared places, people, occasions and to this day haven't a clue how they thought they knew me, but they were convinced they did!

Many years ago I attended my cousin’s wedding in Chillagoe, Queensland and the best man was a ringer on a cattle station two days drive away called Magoo. We got on really well and got up to all sorts over the following week.

Fast forward 15 years and I’m back in Queensland with my eldest son having been invited to join a party going on a crocodile relocation jaunt following that season’s wet on a couple of northern cattle stations. After two days driving we stopped off at another cattle station where we were to spend the night before reaching our destination.

Sitting out having a beer with the Station Manager when we heard a faint noise in the distance. Shortly after a muster helicopter landed and a swag was thrown out, with the pilot following shortly after. He shouldered his swag and headed towards us. We both instantly recognised each other and embraced warmly with a mutual ‘what the **** are you doing here’?

The look of bewilderment on the Station Managers face was an absolute picture. Some bloke from England and a ringer from a station several hundred miles away who knew each other.

I bumped into a bloke from Chiddingly at a tiny off-the-beaten track bar in Tokyo. My old school mate co-owns/runs The Six Bells pub there.so we quickly realised he was a mutual friend and drank the night away.

A lift in a hotel in Hong Kong; Doha airport terminal; a street corner in Toronto; a restaurant in Tortola.

A Trailways bus from Washington DC to Charlottesville in 1978. After about 2 hours I exchanged words with the bloke sitting next to me and it slowly dawned on me that he was someone I recognised as a regular at a pub near Seven Dials. I think we were both en route to see friends at the University of Virginia and to see a Little Feat concert that weekend.

NOT a bumping into but in that same era, on a family holiday to the States in August 1979, we ate a couple of times at a Denny's in Portland, Maine. The American waiter, Howard, was a a big fan of the Albion and especially Peter Ward. Without any prompting, he knew everything about the club at that time, all gleaned from BBC World Service.

When we got back home we sent him a load of Albion stuff including programmes.

Eight pages in and no-one, absolutely no-one, has mentioned a swingers party. There again I suppose it must be difficult to recognise someone without their clothes on.

I lived on Shoreham Beach for 10 years & never got invited or even heard of one. The rumors must be false!

Prague. Sitting in a cafe and two friends from Saltdean walk past. Not so strange but it was off the tourist path.

Spent the rest of the day on the booze.

Not quite a swingers party but a while back myself and Mrs W visited Bristol Gardens Spa and Mrs W was quite horrified to bump into an ex- work colleague banging away with his wife.
