I actually don't want to see them go down, as long as it's not at our expense! West Brom have had it coming for a while but I've nothing against them, the other 2 spots I hope are filled by West Ham and Palace.

I love the sacking of a manager to get a bounce.

I want our Chris sacked NOW, so we make sure of things.
:lolol: :lolol: :lolol:

It's funny how a lot of posters have said "oh shit" as their first reaction. Maybe there is a certain black art to sacking a manager? If you do it at the right time the 'dead cat bounce' maybe enough to see you safe. Unless us Hudds or Newcastle go down I think every other club in the relegation swamp have sacked their manager, so patently sacking the manager doesn't work if everybody does it. So the timing is crucial, do it too early and the bounce effect wears off, I think only Swansea have shown a permanent improvement since changing manager. EDIT: Oh and Palace.

And of course it IS usually only a short-term fix as you chuck any long term planning away with the discarded manager, Sunderland have proved that you can only play this card so many times before someone trumps you, then the short-termism becomes really apparent.

Those that are saying redknapp are either joking or dim - as he took them down before (to break his 0)

I am 100% joking – although I'm probably about 20% dim too :dunce:

Shame - the bounce may see them safe. Don’t care I’ve we stay well away from the bottom three, but I think it will be close

Yes 100%

Nice to have the south coast of England leaving some of England's footballing heartlands in the shade

This season the majority of times it will work as everyone from 9th place down has changed their manager apart from us, Newcastle and Hudds and Bournemouth. Even if all the relegated teams are ones that have changed their manager, more teams will have survived who changed their manager because they were worried about relegation than will be relegated...it obviously works!

Well, if every season, every premier league team changed their manager, then it could be classed as working. Alternatively, you could say that every team that went down had changed their manager so it failed.

Also, if every season, every premier team didn't change their manger, then 'sticking with them' would also work. Or, every team that went down didn't change their manager so they should have done.

The only real gauge is on relative form - before and after sackings. Was there a sustained pick-up in form (taking into account fixtures too)?

Everton fans seem to think that Silva is going there in the summer, why take the job at Saints and potentially ruin your reputation even further?

A few years ago, there's been a bit of research done on this and sacking a manager and appointing a new one makes little difference, unless your manager is very bad (Hyypia) or very good (Hughton).

Take your pick on research

Unfortunately, for everyone in the relegation scrap, Pellegrino did have the look of a Hyppia. Southampton do have a very good squad on paper - and a Mark Hughes type will probably get them the reaction they need to punch away from the bottom three. Irrespective of their problems, we just need to ensure we can get the probable 4 points we need for safety.

All no doubt true, but I think a new manager at Southampton will make a difference because whoever it is will surely decide that doggedly persevering with a defensive formation that leaves a lone forward isolated even when goals are desperately needed is not the way to keep them up. And you'd have to say that Carvalhal has worked wonders at Swansea, unfortunately, also with a change of formation.

So disappointing and unjustified. He was doing a great job. Maybe they will do a 'Newcastle/Shearer' and appoint Le Tissier? He has no experience of managing, so hopefully the end result would be the same. Fortunately the options are quite sparse for Southampton. Few quality coaches will want to go there given the situation and time left in season. Applicants would most likely be the usual Mike Bassett no hopers or names you've never heard of from abroad, hoping to gain a foothold in the Premier League.

Carragher? Not doing anything at the moment

It's unlikely as he doesn't live within spitting distance of the ground.

This has to be a job for Pardew now that West Brom are relegated.

Pardew actually did well for Saints the first time round and re-built their team. That was a long time ago though
