Genuinely interested.

After the usual Brexit lead story bolleaux, the next two stories on the BBC1pm news both concerned court cases of a serious nature.

Lauri Love case: Hacking suspect wins extradition appeal

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-42946540

Ethan Stables convicted over gay pride attack plan

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/england/cumbria

Is this a valid defence, or a cynical defence tactic?

Like I say, genuinely interested.

Any posters have direct experience of this condition?

It is not a defence, the first guy has fought extradition, but will be tried in the UK, the second guy was found Guilty. It should be taken into consideration for sentencing.

From experience most folk with asbergers are very clever but wholly lacking in social skills

exceptionally bright but lacking the social filters most of us have .......a few steps down from out and out tourettes.

no excuse for criminality though i wouldn't have thought .....if your filter is that compromised then you need to be locked up .....no..??

As someone with Aspergers and having known many other high functioning autistic people, I can verify this is often the case and is in mine (although I'm not very intelligent either)

you are a contrary fecker aren't ya.
Guilty, but still, I think I make a fair point.

A lot of people have autism to some extent, and of course that affects their social skills, but saying they are wholly lacking (re asbergers) seems like an exaggeration to me.

was waiting this, thought it would be another poster though :p

haven't followed the details of this case, it does look like the defense "but Asperger's ..." is apparently a defense for some crime. certainly was the case with Gary McKinnon, who admitted hacking and still avoided extradition and so the precedent was set.

You're saying you are wholly lacking in social skills? That's not the impression I have from reading your posts on here.

Judges have said "We have come to the conclusion that Mr Love's extradition would be oppressive by reason of his physical and mental condition."

And added: "We accept that the evidence shows that the fact of extradition would bring on severe depression, and that Mr Love would probably be determined to commit suicide, here or in America."

I think the judges are right. Mr Love is not escaping justice but answering charges in this country where he has family support.

Does this mean that anyone could claim depression as a reason not to be extradited abroad to face trial? I would imagine most people would feel depressed at the thought of be imprisoned abroad.

My best mate's grand daughter, aged 13, was diagnosed as autistic a couple of weeks ago. According to the London town specialist doc, there's no spectrum anymore. Apparently now you've either got it or you don't.

Well it's called Autism Spectrum Disorder. Even if they drop the term 'spectrum', the fact is that not all people with autism are the same. Some have better social skills than others.

I may be having a 'thick' Monday moment, but I don't understand what Ethan Stables has actually done? He clearly isn't 'very clever' that's for sure
