The thing that winds me up about Jim White is the way he talks like the Oracle of Delphi regarding transfers. He's fed misinformation and smokescreens by agents and 'Talksport sources' - invariably managers trying to move dross on - which he laps up and sells as fact when it's complete horseshit.

Take us for example, 3 people know what is really going on, PB will tell White absolutely Jack Shit but I bet you he'll be talking about how 'My good pal at Brighton, Paul Barber tells me there is nothing doing in that rumour' tomorrow based on nothing more than his conversation today where he gave nothing away. He's a chancer who knows as much as kids making up fake Agent twitter transfer accounts inbetween whacking off on pornhub. The absolute bell cheese.

I can't stand Jim White however he has done the hard yards as a sports reporter. 5 years in the papers north of the border, then 7 years as entertainment reporter on Scottish TV and then became sports reporter. Two years later he became the main presenter of Scotsport and then joined Sky another 8 years after that.
So a few decades ago he was a sports journalist for a few years, but not since?

But we're talking about the transfer window, and whether we need to strengthen still. I thought we'd need another central midfielder to cover Stephens/Propper/Kayal. The suggestion is that Gross can cover those positions too, and I'm not sure he can so I was asking if he'd played in that position. I accept that he's played in midfield for us, but AFAIK not in the role of Stephens or Propper.

And I'm not contesting yours  You said he's played in a midfield 5 and I accept that, thanks, I'm just rephrasing my question to see if he can do the Stephens/Propper role should we get injuries.

I can't remember where I read it but I am sure it was a German sports journalist that said Gross is as good in CM or no.10 role. The only downside is that you lose a little bit from him in either position.

On subject, I like PB.

Thanks. Again with them, rather than in their place. Do you remember his role in the game? Presumably he was supposed to be creative whilst letting Stephens do more of the defending?

I can't say I've gone over the game recently, but they all seemed to have pretty similar roles (certainly defensively). Gross was on the left of the three, and I guess he was slightly more attacking than the other two (as the left sided midfielder of the 3 often tends to be). Certainly playing in a midfield 3 is easier than in a 2, but I'm sure that Hughton sees Gross as our 4th CM. Not sure who would would fill in the CAM role though if this were to happen: presumably one of Knockaert or March. It does slightly surprise me that we aren't attempting to get someone else in as an Izzy Brown replacement.

Probably won’t happen but all our midfielders are more attacking/playmaker sorta players and I’d say we need a player in the Makelele/Kante type role to clear up in front of the defence as well as maybe a pacier CB to sit in the middle of the CBS if CH wants to stick with 5 at the back
