Onwards with another fascinating encounter. A complete mismatch in terms of size but this is what WHC is all about? There's more than one type of hard in the animal kingdom.

Hippo.jpg

The Hippo is having a beast of a tournament this year and will harbour high hopes of lifting the trophy in 2018, having comfortably dispatched both the Salt Water Crocodile and the Siberian Tiger on its serene path to the semis.

The Hippo is a herbivore but that's where any trace of softness ends. It has faultless WHC credentials with bulk allied to brute force and a brawler's instincts. The Hippo fears nobody.

It can weigh up to three tons, it can sprinting up to 30km/h and has one of the strongest bite force among mammals. This rascal can do so much more than simply eat grass.

When threatened the Hippo's game is all about aggression and attack and it doesn't just reserve its battling for the animal kingdom. It is responsible for the deaths of up to 500 people every year and is arguably the most feared of all creatures in Africa.

The Hippo has the game required to go all the way but will it know what to do with its tiny foe?

Grasshopper Mouse - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grasshopper_mouse
3rd in Group B with 19 votes
2nd Round - Beat the Grizzly Bear 44-41
Quarter Final - Beat the Black Mamba 46-44

Grasshopper Mouse.jpg

The Grasshopper Mouse has had a right old slog to make it through to the final four. Drawn in the Group of Death, it beats the Orca and saw off the Mantis Shrimp and it has had tough, tight encounters in each of the knockout rounds. However, it's going to need to smash through the 50 vote barrier to progress and its up against a hippo that hasn't shown an ounce of weakness so far. It's going to be very, very tough for the smallest competitor remaining in this year's contest.

The mouse satisfies all the requirements of a true WHC warrior through its sheer hostility. What it lacks in weight, claws, teeth or bite force it makes up for in pure aggression.

It howls at the moon to let fellow mice know who's boss. This is more than merely posturing, as it governs a huge territory for a creature of its size. The Grasshopper Mouse's "patch" measures up to 28 acres in size. Yes, that's right. That's 14 Amex pitches to you and I.

It attacks Bark Scorpions and has developed the ability to convert its enemy's neurotoxins into painkillers. The Grasshopper Mouse repeatedly bites through the scorpion's exoskeleton, eventually paralysing it. The Grasshopper Mouse will also take down spiders, lizards and even snakes.

Perhaps its overarching headmental achievement is its cannibalism. When held captive with other mice, the Grasshopper Mouse will simply kill and eat them as a means of getting a meal and some peace and quiet.

If the hippo howled at the moon and cannibalised any other hippo anywhere near it, then I'd vote Hippo. But it doesn't.

The Hippo crippled the Croc and terrified the Tiger but it's not having everything its own way in this encounter. The Mouse is putting up a right old scrap.

Disappointingly low voter turnout here for a semi final. I can only presume mouse fans are too busy watching it tear apart some snakes and giant centipedes, or smashing in the skull of another mouse.

People are put off by the inevitability of another Man United Badger win. It's killing the competition.

That Hippo takes no shit- or sprays it.

A new name on the CUP this year. It bodes well.

Its not been the same since the Bobit Worm had to play the tiger behind closed doors and was cheated out of the competition.

I've got a lot of time for the mouse, it's proper mental. A howling cannibal. But...

The Hippo is the Daddy. It has absolutely no need to do anything. Yet it does. It lives in the middle of a load of apex predators who all give him a wide berth. Why? Because he's a wildly unpredictable, hugely aggressive monster of a beast. It attacks apex predators for fun. The only animals that can really pose a threat to it are weaponised humans. so what does it do when it sees a boat load of the passing by? Run away? Hide? No. It goes all out attack and steams into the boat. For the sheer hell of it. The Hippo is the very definition of hard.

It's tough on the mouse who I would fancy to beat either of the other semi finalists but that's the WHC for you. The hardest survives. And that's the HIPPO.
