And so we come to the end of the Round 2. The Polar Bear is WHC's grandee and will always be fancied whenever it enters the AnimalDome. However, despite being a multiple title winner it found itself given a hiding by the Honey Badger in the group stage. Was it simply conserving its strength for greater battles to come? The Asian Giant Hornet was tied second in Group A, sharing its podium place with the Siberian Tiger and seeing off the Grizzly along the way. It's a fearsome flying thing to be sure but does it have what it takes to put away its illustrious opponent?

Polar Bear - 2nd in Group C with 14 votes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_bear

Big and beautiful, the Polar Bear is WHC royalty. Perfectly adapted for the harshest environment on Earth, the Polar Bear is a three time WHC winner. Every Arctic creature fears the Polar Bear and with good reason. Only mankind has come close to harming it via hunting and climate change. It is a skilled hunter with numerous strategies for catching its prey. It's feeds on seals, whose skull it can crack in a single bite. However, it will also take down belugas, narwhal and and walrus. It can smell a seal's breathing hole from a click away and will lie in wait for one to surface before dragging it out. On open ice a Polar Bear can smell a seal from around 30 kilometres. It can then stalk seals unnoticed before breaking into a 25 mph charge.

Asian Giant Hornet - Tied 2nd in Group A with 15 votes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_giant_hornet

Terrifying. Bloody terrifying. When the Asian Giant Hornet gets its act together, people watch out. With a half a centimetre sting carrying a fierce punch the AGH is not to be taken lightly. It is responsible for 30 to 40 deaths in Japan alone each year. The AGH has an unusually toxic sting. While a single sting is not normally fatal it can result in anaphylactic shot. Several stings can result in cardiac arrest or multiple organ failure. And it's the size of your fist.

Bounce!

A tie that has seemingly gone entirely under the radar. It's looking comfortable for the Polar Bear at the moment but with a day of voting and a queue outside the polling booth anything could still happen.

To provide a sense of perspective here, of all the qualifiers for the quarters so far the Honey Badger is head and shoulders above the rest, making it through with 88 votes. The Polar Bear might be a perennial favourite but it's way behind the defending champ and struggling to put away a spiky opponent this time round. Can the hornet mount a late challenge and cause a real upset?

POLL CLOSED - POLAR BEAR 24 ASIAN GIANT HORNET 18

The second round ends with an easy, yet oddly subdued, victory for the Polar Bear. It wasn't enough to stop him playing to the crowd and messing around with an Arctic selfie though...

PB.jpg

The Hornet never really got out of first gear and the Polar Bear will feel it has much more to give going into the quarter final. Now we know the final eight and here they are.

Honey Badger
Orca
Black Mamba
Tasmanian Devil
Hippopotamus
Grasshopper Mouse
Siberian Tiger
Polar Bear

Despite the weight of expectation on its shoulders the Honey Badger continues to impress. The Polar Bear can never be ruled out and the Grasshopper Mouse will always be in with a chance. However, the Hippopotamus was the real winner in round two, trouncing a startled Salt Water Crocodile.

Be sure to join us tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for the quarter final draw of WHC XI, brought to you live and exclusive on NSC HD.
