Why no mention of the VAR system by the commentators?

Back in August the BBC re-showed the first Premier League MOTD back in 1992, and the commentators (Motson in particular) don't half bang on about the backpass rule.

Commentators always need to hook on to the next big thing to talk about.

They were using VAR tonight? Wow, didn't hear it mentioned.

Because it did not suit those commentating to mention it as there were no contentious decisions (much to their sadness) !!!

Considering it is all they talked about you would think they would have got their presenter and pundits to actually understand how it works so they do not sound so stupid when analysing

This. Ferdinand saying "they need to make it clearer" like.... What? How clear do you want it

And ironically before the game all the commentators were saying that it needed to be as unobtrusive as possible - surely that's precisely how it was used?

Worked well didn’t it? Slight doubt over the winning goal, dismissed in seconds with no delay to the play. Most of the criticism seemed to come from people moaning that VAR wasn’t used when it’s actually being used automatically on every game-changing moment. People who in many cases - like some prominent national journalists - should have known better and made an effort to understand how it works and what it’s used for. Interestingly from their initial stance that it had caused utter confusion (a better story), most of the media seem to have caught on that it had actually been used properly and worked very well and have had to fall in line to declare it successful.

Still not sure it will be well liked and I reckon there could be many complaints in future (mainly over ‘soft’ penalties for off the ball incidents) but it did the job this time. Imagine if the ref initially thought Murray HAD handled as apparently some fans did... then it really would have come into its own in making sure the goal was allowed.

I watched it on BTsport and it was constantly being mentioned by their commentators, Adam Virgo being one
