Had this conversation with PC Balkham tonight and it sounds like there will be a bit more dialogue between fans and police ahead of the cup match. It would be great if last week's debacle became the start of meaningful fan input for policing of future games.

The Hacienda
is it just me or does this deflect away from the real issue....I arrived with about half and hour to Ko and there was serious disturbances outside the ground with Brighton fans waiting for the palace fans to arrive...lots of pushing and shoving . i made my way to the north stand entrance, was being patted down, and suddenly the whole crowd surged forward towards the memorial garden /coffee seller where the palace fans were being escorted and i saw punches being thrown and the usual pointing bravely by twats.

I got in the ground and my mate was stuck outside and witnessed brighton fans trying to get up the stairs by the west stand to get at the palace fans who were goading them.

It then transpires, from a video posted on youtwatter of palace fans storming over turnstiles and stewards being threatened and entering the ground with no tickets...they then as witnessed by all teh 30K+ fans in there smoke canisters being let off..pyrotechnics and bangers going off...

So apart from all that we are all concentrating on a stupid copper who reported that he saw knuckle dusters and knives, when it looks as though there wasnt some...which may even lead to the resignation of a highly respected officer at Sussex.

So who are the criminals here...the palace fans who behaved like twats and meant that genuine fans with tickets couldn't get into the ground, or a stupid police officer who reported something that wasn't actually seen?

Not at all, the fact are the police should be there to protect not lie about football fans again. The Palace fans did not cover themselves in glory however those in power should not abuse that position

Absolutely disgusting by the polis but it does not surprise unfortunately especially aimed at football fans

Although the police have acted disgracefully and clearly lied, the amount of Palace fans on social media using this to insist their fans were angels and it was all the police and clubs fault, is quite staggering...

We should have given them the full allocation, if they can’t police it, it’s their problem. Football is nothing without fans!

I don't think the police lied as such rather they took unverified information from one anonymous phonecall stating that there were Palace fans running around the city with knives and knuckledusters and reported it as fact. A very poor decision from Ch Insp Simon Nelson to take that information and publicise it in the way he did without getting any sort of corroboration and without a single one of his officers seeing a knife or knuckle-duster or even reporting it to him. Who knows, perhaps the person who made that call genuinely did see such a thing but rank incompetence from Nelson to report it in the way that he did. He cocked up and shouldn't be allowed to police another football match again.
