I think the bandwidth is being squeezed on some channels. ITV was always shitehouse though.

I'm ok with SD. Unless I'm watching football or a water based scene, I can't see enough difference to worry.

There are two TVs elsewhere in the house that most of the TV watching in the house is done on, I just keep it on for the background noise, mostly watching Talking Pictures or Sky Sports Mix whilst I watch anime on the PC

its partially down to the larger screen showing the smaller resolution image is upscaled and therefore bluring in the process. though someone told me (or i read, prehaps even here) that ITV and some other channels send a poorer SD signal to reduce bandwidth and squezze extra channels in.

Exactly the opposite in our house. We had HD anyway, which was impressive. We have just bought a new better tele - nothing too ridiculous, but a Samsung 43", I think for about £500. It's stunning.

But it was mrs DiS who instigated it all and did most of the research, and we both love it equally. Both football fans and so the quality there is enormously noticeable.

Mrs H always watches SD. I can only think that the effort of pressing three buttons instead on one is too much for her as (on the rare occasion when she has the buttons) if I ask her "stick it on 104 luv" she gives one of those "women's sighs" that convey the same annoyance as if I had asked her to go down to the river and fetch back a bucket of water on her head.

Countdown is a must in HD...

Without a doubt this is a thing. The game changer for me about five years ago was getting the new Virgin HD box in time for Wimbledon and being quite AGOG that the net wasn’t a homogenous piece of black cloth. Unreal detail.

Suddenly made the women’s matches much more palatable too. [emoji102]

I’ve thought this for a while now, especially Sky Sports. Cricket balls are basically single cuboid pixels in SD now and seem to skip across the green background slower than on a CPC6128 hooked up to an old GRUNDIG 14 incher.

If a water based scene comes on the TV do you quickly switch to HD, and then back again?

Just read this thread to the wife. I got in at 9.30 and plonked on the sofa and grabbed the remote. She said "OK I am watching that" so I replied "I know but I am putting on channel 178" and we had a debate about why it bothers me but not her. I said it is her crap eyesight.

No, I start watching nature programmes in HD to start with. Then I watch other programmes in SD. Its not the end of the world if the news has a water based scene, I do watch that in SD. Do you ever watch SD programmes?
