That said, his was a quiet, yet authoritative voice; the voice of Saturday afternoons for 16 years, delivering the joy of a fine win, or the weekend-wrecking news of a miserable defeat - and treating those two imposters just the same.

RIP.

Used to rely on the tone of his voice to determine whether the last leg of the football fivefold had come up or not awaiting that last scottish div 2 result
Strangely in those days when you could only do a min five timer if including home wins or min treble if away teams (single bets were only allowed on live tv games) had a much better success rate than now when you can wager singles on anything you like
Football must be more unpredictable now than say in the 80's
I started betting on football matches from about the age of 8 (10p per line mind you or 50p to cover 3 out of 5 aways) so this geezer's voice would have been part of the staple of my youth
