When I was a teenager my cousin was a bugler in TS Vanguard (Worthing Sea Cadets) band and played Last Post for a number of years at the war memoriaL outside of the town hall.. I suppose there are not that many Sea Cadet, Army Cadet or Air Cadet bands nowadays.

Why on earth would you suppose that? Just because the club asked the Salvation Army to our match, doesn't mean the cadet forces have any less musicians.
My granddaughter is in the NTC, & today I've seen lots of photos of youngsters at parades up & down the country.

There just doesnt seem so much mentioned about them publicly but perhaps I am wrong and there are as many cadet forces as in the 50s and 60s.

My Grandad, who I never met, he died before just I was born, he was in the Royal Flying Corps which later morphed into the RAF.

In the Great War his job was to be flown, close to the ground, taking notes on advances or retreats of our and our enemies positions. His reports gave to military command as up to date information as possible on the state of the battle/s.

He was awarded an MC and a Military OBE for his work, and never, ever spoke about his war for the rest of his life. He had been to hell and back.

RIP Matthew Henry Davies.

Been to Ypres about 4 times, really brings home the scale and horror that unfolded there.

My main advice if going is book a tour, either full or half day. You'll get so much more than just visiting a place. We use Frontline Tours which you book through the net, they pick you up and transport you around for the day. If you do it on your own sure you'll see stuff but it's the knowledge they give you which makes it live. I know it sounds strange but I'd also take time to go to the German cemetery in Passchendaele it's also moving for the sheer scale of the number of bodies crammed in to a hole the size of a tennis court. We left there feeling sorry for those men too, they were only doing what they thought was right at the end of the day too.

In the evening I would go to the bar about 50 yards from the Menin Gate on the right as you head back in to town. They have 25 local beers on tap and you can buy a 4 beer tasting menu.

Cannot recommend Lionel at Frontline Tours enough.

Having done a number of our own daytrips to First World War sites including Aubers where a lot of Sussex lads died I would always recommend an escorted tour. We have subsequently been on a couple of four day tours which were so much more rewarding, interesting and educating. The second included a last day following parts of the route of the retreat to Dunkirk which was an experience in itself.
I would recommend to anyone going to Ypres a visit to the church of St George in a street behind the Cloth Hall which is a shrine in itself. There is also the Ypres reservoir CWGC cemetery further on.

Lynn's coach company from Eastbourne run trips they got one going to Dunkirk
The driver we had was very knowledgable.
