Why on earth would you want to find ways to help them avoid paying their tax liabilities ?

So do you think Nissan and Honda just decided to build massive car production factories in the UK employing thousands of people for zero incentive ?

I'm not sure that listing more multinationals who don't pay their tax is an answer to the question ?

Nothing any of these individuals or organisations have done is illegal. Immoral possibly.

If the reports about Lord Ashcroft and the Punta Gorda Trust are true then there's huge questions about full disclosures, ethics, promises made and donations to the Tory Party. This is the real story here. The Queen investing £10m overseas is really of no consequence.

MPs all involved in sex scandals and now the Queen stashing her money away offshore . None of the establishment work for the people or represent us nowadays.

Fair enough but people get angry about how Starbucks get around corporate tax law but they employ a lot of people

This is one of the most naive and simplistic arguments out there. Just imagine Starbucks didn't exist, don't you think that someone else would fill the coffee making void, people who would not only employ people but might also pay their taxes, like what Costa do.

But this whole conversation started because when i asked why they shouldn't pay tax, you said that we have to look at the bigger picture and they employ people who pay tax.

In what way does this justify them not paying the tax they are liable for ?

Naturally they would as the demand is there and for the record I don't actually agree the way Starbucks get away with it but they employ people who pay taxes although according to some these are not the right jobs.

What is a right job ?

I thought the Queen agreed to under the Bliar regime

yes she agreed to pay taxes voluntarily. its actually the Duchy of Lancaster, which is estate owned by the crown, the state. probably should have avoided overseas investments for the potential for embaressment.

the thing is they do pay the tax they are liable to, its just that tax isnt liable in the UK because they export their profits elsewhere. in the case of Starbucks they are certainly very aggressive in making sure as much profit is transfered, its the tax system and the nature of multinational that allow this.

There's also the wider issue here that ultimately, it sends the message that corporate tax avoidance is perfectly fine because the rest of us will pick up the tab with income tax and NI. Corporation Tax in the UK is at an extremely low rate both historically in the UK and compared to other major nations. A flat rate 19% and on target to be 17% by 2020. Compare that with income tax that starts at 20% and peaks at 45%. It's offensive that companies are encouraged to avoid even paying the lower rate of corp tax and shifting the burden to their employees.

Austerity was supposed to be about all in this together. Surely, that includes the companies too?

I understand the way multinationals operate (I've worked for a few and been involved in profit/loss and tax obligations for them), I just wondered why Beach Hut was defending them taking on their obligations, morally or legally. (I believe now that he wasn't defending, simply observing).

cooperation ?? that`s what you do when you do pay tax. And employees on meagre pay don`t have to pay any tax!!

Yes it’s a spelling error. My bad. I of course meant corporations. Depends how meagre the salary. Store managers, shift supervisors etc pay tax. So I ask again, why should they pay tax if the company actively avoid doing so?

I have not defended them at all just pointed out some of the reasons why governments would offer inducements to these multinational companies.

This could be really big news. If the Queen / royal family is on a tax evasion scheme they can all do one. I love the fact as tax payers we do up their palaces and then they say its about tourism blah blah blah - do you ever feel like you've been mugged off, I do?

You've been " mugged off" for the grand total of 56p.
