A quick win can change everything.... shortly. They are indeed the crack cocaine of gambling. Should be banned or the maximum stakes much much lower

Never understand why people gamble "against" machines, if you're gonna bet, put an old fashioned bet on and wait for the outcome

why do it ?
Fairly simple
1. To win
2. To recover losses
One thing leads to another, they are horrid things. But I'm not sure legislation is the right answer ... I've known many people 'go bust' on sports betting and have had to deal with people ruined by scratch cards and lottery tickets.
Gambling as a whole isn't for everyone and it's generally the vulnerable that experience the worst of it
I've never played one, but aren't they basically Roulette, which is fixed odds when 'live' betting too?

I've done a few nags and woof-woofs over the years, most certainly down on the deal overall. Never seen the appeal of these things though.
High street bookies are just the tip of the iceberg. Online is (so called) regulated but they are regulating the wrong things. I'd go along with some affordability checks although I'm not sure it could be made practical

Pretty much. You have a better chance of putting a tenner in one of the machines and making a profit than 5 lotto tickets. But when people win well. You can beat the machines over a spin or 2 but long well short term there is one winner. And then people ending up trying to claw money back and it goes severely tits up

I've been in bookies putting my small footie bets on, and in the time it's taken to choose my games, I've seen people go back to the counter with their credit card about 4 times saying 'another £100 on machine 1 pls'.

Punters want to win immediately and without the stress of it like you have to go through with horse racing or football.
I heard one punter's story on this and he said his winnings was just a number. He didn't know when to stop because either a.) he was on a winning roll or b.) he was chasing his losses.
As someone who never plays FOBT's I think they are chasing stress-free money and want something for nothing in a way. A horse race can leave you feeling terrible if your nag gets chinned by a nose and the same with football - an injury time equaliser when you're on the cusp of an acca with all teams winning comfortably and the one you're concerned about let's you down. The heart certainly pumps with those.

Not sure if we are sleepwalking into a gambling crisis or perhaps just starting to wake up and come to our senses...
The smoking "ban" has had a hugely positive effect.
Something similarly radical in relation to banning the promotion of gambling is now long overdue.
Thats where its wrong . you should not be allowed to get credit to then gamble . I believe (and i may be wrong) but in Vegas you cannot withdraw cash to bet on a credit card ) .
It should be regualted so that no credit is available . If you want to spunk your money from your debit card so be it .

yup and likely thing is they will get 200 quid off it and chase the 2 they are owed. They should be capped at a quid a spin or banned altogether. Big differnce IMO is going to a casino with the amount you are prepared to lose in your pocket which can be a good night out and social VS high street bookies taking credit cards
