The council are going to offer to flatten the site to try and get the ball rolling for the developer.

In fairness they have had some bad luck. The site was briefly owned by the Irish government after the crash and one potential developer died in a car crash.

I bought my first house in Broadwater in 1978. Used to shop in Teville Gate fairly regularly. I remember a Mothercare type pram shop there. Always called it Teville rhyming with Devil myself

The stream was once known as the Selbourne or Selborne, as evidenced by two locations on the stream's route - Selbourne Terrace, which stands on Teville Road, and Selborne Road, in which Davison High School lies. It was also known for a while as Town Mead Ditch, after a common known as Town Mead that lay near the Teville common.

Far be it from me to question the great local historian but, Selbourne terrace is in Tarring road, not Teville.

I got chased through Teville gate by a group of girls in tracksuits with bottles of WKD being brandished as weapons. I was 12.

Nice to see Worthing trying to retain some of its heritage and keep the place authentic.

Indeed. I went down to watch the race, and a mate of mine won it in just over 3 hours. [MENTION=5200]Buzzer[/MENTION]'s brother and his mad STE pals should not be allowed in the pub - every time they have a chat they come up with another crackpot race idea. I'm doing their next marathon - 72 laps of the cycle track at Preston Park...................

As I recall the original problem with development was that Comet had one of their most profitable shops on the site and refused to let go of their lease. Now they have gone the coast is clear for development.

It is an arse of an area though. Would like to see something special on it, but to be frank literally anything would be better than what has been there for far too long.

Flats with shops and restaurants under them but without wishing to sound snobby who would want to open a high or reasonable class restaurant underneath social housing. I think the most likely is social housing with Iceland, Poundland and the like under them very much like the Broadfield centre in Crawley. It will only ever make money when it has flats built on it.

I think they are aiming a little higher than this. I expect the development to be "decent" if not spectacular.

With the latest on social housing is it not likely that the flats will be developed in the main for the council/housing associations to use at what was called council houses yesteryear. Is there not adequate housing available through out the area to meet the needs of the private housing market. I would think that the planning approval will stipulate a % of the flats for social housing as that seems to be the trend at the moment.

Any developer that wants to make any money out of a development will try and minimise the social housing element. They have to have a set % of it but nonetheless it won't dominate this development and the shop area on the ground floor is therefore likely to be more classy than it used to be.

If it's done properly, it's a big enough site, it could be good. That's a big "if" though. People need a reason to go there.

They could do with one or two of the big stores being interested like Tesco/Sainsbury M & S etc but then the car park is to be demolishd for the flats so parking will be a problem. This then leaves specialist shops and how long can they survive.

I don't think it was Comet, I think it was an independent trader that had a shop in the undercover bit. Can't find a source though.

I miss the milkshake place !
