Reading the BBC Sport Twitter thread on Keane's call-up has been very interesting, and very heartening from the POV of a Brighton fan - multiple people on there who aren't Brighton fans and so can see Dunk without the blue & white tint that we all do saying that he is more deserving of this than Keane is.

Maybe it has been overstated during the season so far, but it really is fantastic to look at the Premier League and see us sitting 8th and to have one of our players, a home grown one at that, being widely seen as deserving of an England call up. We really have come a long, long way together - long may it remain so.

I'm really happy Dunk didn't get called up as should we all be. Its a game he cant now get injured in and also an England call up pretty much just accelerates the time till he leaves us for a bigger club. Far better he only has his domestic football to concentrate on from our perspective.

Keane is another player who has played a significant number of games at England (and Ireland!) youth level. That appears to be going against Dunk at the moment regardless of his form.

Dunky wants it more than most of the PL ex-academy players...puts his body on the line, not afraid to clump someone, but can play football as well. Probably would have been selected ahead of Southgate in 96 all things being equal. I cant wait to see him start for England - eventually - if Cahill can be a regular, despite being protected by one of the best midfields in the world, Dunk by comparison should be captain.

It’s probably been mentioned but England are going to get absolutely smashed in these 2 friendlies so it might be best that Dunk isn’t involved.

I'm happy that Dunk didn't get a call up but is Dunk happy himself he didn't.

If the papers say it and his agent is on it then he may genuinely believe he can get to the World cup..........................by moving to a "big" club first.

Agree. Best to ease him in with a defeat to Finland or something.

NO!!!!!!!!!

England have this habit of taking young fit footballers and sending them back to their clubs crocked and demoralised.

Let's hope the palace/England manager overlooks dunk for as long as possible!

what people are forgetting is that Keane has more experience than Dunk of both the Premier and England and is the man in possession so that bodes well for him.

whilst I get what you are saying having seen a number of Everton games recently via tv it's clear that Keane is playing poorly thus making a mockery of Southgates statement that he will pick on form.

is it Keane or the Everton defence in general with no support from those in front of them?

All England managers use that form line but it's total baloney. They all revert to type - reputation and club they play for.

The last manager to pick on form was Sven when he first started and didn't know England players very well which is how Chris Powell and Gavin McCann ended up in the England squad.

Ian Wright just bigging up Lewis again on 5Live, saying he should be in ahead of Keane, and that he isn't going to stop banging the drum until Southgate gives him a go.

Like the Premier League, it's a highly pressured results business and a manager at International level will go for tried and trusted every time (especially this close to a major international competition) as they know that it's their job and reputation on the line and it's a situation that's not helped by having a press and media that turns very quickly on managers if things start to go wrong and fans who pay little attention to qualifying (unless it goes badly) and then think we should be easy winners once the tournament starts and anything less is a disaster
