The chicken meat scandal

The largest supplier of chicken to UK supermarkets has been tampering with food safety records in moves that could dupe consumers into buying meat past its use-by date.

An investigation by the Guardian and ITV News recorded undercover footage of workers altering the slaughter date of poultry being processed at a 2 Sisters Food Group plant. The group produces a third of all poultry products eaten in the UK and supplies top grocers including*Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Aldi and Lidl.

When informed of the evidence, four of the five retailers responded to say they would launch immediate investigations.

The discovery comes just four years after the*2013 horsemeat scandal, which has resulted in prison sentences for those convicted of a conspiracy to pass off cheaper horsemeat as beef.

Experts said the practice of changing “kill dates” could artificially stretch the commercial life of meat products by triggering the food processor to print incorrect use-by dates on supermarket packaging."

I got some chicken from Tesco the other week that had about 5 days before the 'use by'

Opened it and the chicken was rancid, absolutely stunk rotten. Would not surprise me...

This just reinforces my decision to not buy chicken or pork products from supermarkets.

Full of water and tasteless imo.

Local butchers/farms/bacon specialists only smidge more expensive but the quality difference far outweighs this.

Just my opinion obv!

Is anyone actually surprised by this......

I'm no vegetarian and actually on leaving school worked in an abattoir and then a butchers, but i just don't trust the big supermarkets and if I do buy meat (once a week now) I buy from the counter and what I or my daughter want and that is only beef or pork/bacon.... chicken and lamb have been off the menu for years.

After we fully Brexit we can enjoy chlorinated chicken from the U.S. Should kill off germs, bad smells and prolong the shelf life.

Eurgh.

I'm not a vegetarian, but really think we could all do with eating less meat.

Supermarket meat is one thing in life I won't go anywhere near. It tastes terrible, it's full of water, it's obviously low in quality, it's overpriced and you can only buy certain quantities. About three years ago I started going to a local butchers every Saturday morning and immediately noticed the gulf in quality of the meat. What's more, it's hardly any more expensive - partly because the prices are reasonable and also because you can buy the exact amount you need. For example, mince is £6.99/kg in the butchers and I buy 350/400g for two of us, costing about £2.80. In Tesco you have to buy 500g (half of which is fat) for £3. I buy enough meat for two of us each week for £15-£18. Bargain. I just wish the greengrocers near me was good as I'd love to ditch the supermarkets for fruit and veg too if I could.

Just did a google on butchers around Three Bridges, your post interested me. All f'kin Halal, won't touch the stuff.

Get all my chicken from Malpass in Shoreham. Got fed up of taking smelly chicken back to Tesco and Asda.

Dead is dead. The final killing blow is only the last insult in a terrible life for all of these animals. Dairy cows having probably the worst life of all, so frankly worrying about halal seems a bit ironic. A bit like being really 'green' but still eating meat.

I often wonder if it's the religious element people don't like.
