No way can he go to Australia now. There is absolutely no history whatsoever of British people going to Australia following criminal investigations.

Update:

England cricketer Ben Stokes was arrested after an incident in Bristol early on Monday.

He will not be available for England's fourth one-day international against West Indies on Wednesday, the England and Wales Cricket Board has announced.

Team-mate Alex Hales, who was with Stokes, will also miss the match and has returned to Bristol to help police with their inquiries.

Stokes was held overnight after the team's victory in the third ODI.

He's been released without charge though so he's free to go to Australia. The person who'd be more worried is Hales: he's on the fringes of a test place, the selectors may decide he's not worth the risk.

Further updates:

England all-rounder Ben Stokes was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm after a nightclub incident in Bristol early on Monday.

He will not be available for England's fourth one-day international against West Indies on Wednesday, the England and Wales Cricket Board has announced.

Team-mate Alex Hales, who was with Stokes, will also miss the match and has returned to Bristol to help police.

Stokes was held overnight after the team's victory in the third ODI.

The 26-year-old Test vice-captain was arrested after an incident at about 02:35 BST at the city's Mbargo club which left another man needing hospital treatment for facial injuries.

England are due to name their squad on Wednesday for the Ashes tour of Australia.

"Selectors have been instructed to select the Ashes squad based on form and fitness as they normally would do," said England director of cricket Andrew Strauss.

The team went 2-0 up in the best-of-five ODI series with a 124-run victory on Sunday.

Statement from Avon and Somerset Police

"We were called to a disorder in Queens Road, Clifton, at around 2.35am on Monday [25 September].

"A 27-year-old man was found to have suffered facial injuries and was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary for treatment.

"A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and has since been released under investigation.

"We'd appeal for anyone who was in the Clifton Triangle area in the early hours of Monday who saw any part of this incident, to call Investigations on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5217218578."

Statement from England and Wales Cricket Board

"Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will not be available for tomorrow's one-day international match against West Indies at The Oval.

"Stokes was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning, 25 September, following an incident in Bristol.

"He was held overnight and released under investigation - without charge - late on Monday and will not join the team in London.

"Hales, who was with Stokes on Sunday night, did not train this morning and has returned voluntarily to Bristol today to help police with their enquiries.

"You will understand that we cannot offer further detail at this stage but will provide any updates when we can."

The guy is an accident waiting to happen after a few jars... bumped into him out and about the same night we beat Australia in the 1st test in Cardiff a couple of years back. He was with Gary Ballance, and Ballance left to go back to the team hotel and literally lumbered Stokes with me and my best mate... you'd think that would be a decent crack but he was all over the show and we just couldn't shake him off. He did get us into Tiger Tiger (lucky us) when they were 'full' but other than that it was a relief to get away from him in the end!

Hales hasn't been arrested. He went voluntarily to assist police, probably to stand up for his team mate.

Mea culpa. I saw that he wasn't available and assumed he'd been dropped for disciplinary reasons. Can't see how this will affect Ashes selection then - they won't drop Stokes, not matter what he's done.
