So you have been to both ? Krakow and Buda ?

Been to all 4 cities I mentioned.

Edit sorry just seen your post above. I wasn't aware of any fines for Jay walking.

Off to Krakow again on Wednesday. Beautiful little city. Interesting you rate it higher than the others. I have also been to Prague twice.

Mind you, Krakow is fairly pedestranised so there wasn't much Jay walking needed.

Just my personal favourite. They are are all good. Forgot to mention that Berlin was quite reasonably priced and also interesting. I have not been but have heard that the Baltic states are not worth a visit.

Many people stay in the districts around Krakow. We stayed in the Jewish district therefore Jaywalking is quit possible. More likely crossing on a red light will catch you.

Opera House - beautiful and cheap

I saw a wonderfully sung Don Giovanni there - sat in the most expensive seats in the house and paid about £3 (this was some time ago). Opera in all former Eastern Bloc countries tends to be great value: tickets are still pretty cheap and the standards are exceptionally high,

We went a couple of years ago, fantastic city. Stayed in Buda right on the river in Hotel Victoria. a good deal and a great view of parliament and the Danube.

As everyone has said, food and beer is really cheap, we had a 3 course meal and beers all evening for £35, thought they had made a mistake! So tip well and you will be treated like a king.

Enjoy, its a fab place, we went to the baths too, bit expensive and very smelly but each to their own, massage was good.

Fantastic city. Be sure to try a few traditional Hungarian restaurants, some great local grub there! And the spas are an absolute must!

again, a few years back but another vote for Statue Park and the Terror Museum.

I also saw one of the shittiest matches in history, Ferencevaros v Gyor (1-0) they have a great new stadium now but the old one was like Withdean although the massive floodlights were very Eastern Europe. Despite a relatively small crowd (7000) there were about 2000 Ultras behind the goal and at least antics kept me entertained for 90 minutes if the football didn't.

You can't leave the story there, why the fines?

Nothing exciting really, it wasn't gun running or anything. It all started when I was taken away by armed police after landing at Budapest airport. Actually it started before that when a stewardess told me that I couldn't drink my own drink on the flight. I told her that I would finish it and then not drink anymore but she might like to have a word with a hen party who were drinking wine and Baileys out of the bottle and dancing in the planes aisles. (there wasn't any hassle from anyone and this was a few years back now)
Then when my wife passed my phone back to me from her handbag the same stewardess asked if I had been making phone calls. I just laughed and thought she was definetly in a mood now.
So when we collected all the rubbish as we prepared to land - in a bag she had given us - we must have collected about 12 small bottles of wine from the seats around us with an assortment of other different types of small spirit bottles and whatever. She said to me, "Have you drunk all these" I think that was the only time I made a flippant remark along the lines of having a serious drink problem which made some of the other passengers around us laugh. She stormed off in the direction of the cockpit with smoke coming out of her ears. Anyway, next thing is we hear the Captains voice.
"Please can everyone on the plane remain seated after landing as there has been an incident on board and police will be coming on board to deal with it"
We all got excited when they arrived thinking, "Ooh I wonder what's gone on."
They walked along the plane and stopped at me and asked for my passport, tapped their guns to show that they were armed police and whisked me off to a waiting car and told me not to resist arrest and a translator would arrive in minutes.
Very melodramatic I thought. I half expected to be told to hit the deck with my arms outstretched.I was interviewed for about an hour and then released, but told that the matter may be taken further.
"What matter", I thought.
When I got into the airport proper the bags had still not come and I was given about 4 or 5 phone numbers from people who had sat near us in case I needed someone to verify that the stewardess was some sort of pre menstrual psycho.
I thought the matter was closed but I got an official letter from the Hungarian authorities but I couldn't read it because It wasn't in English. I thought about getting it translated and picked a few words out but just ignored it in the end. Then I got the 2nd letter through which basically said I had been convicted in my absence of drinking onboard an aircraft when told not to, using my phone to ring my office ( I don't work in an office) and dancing in the aisle. Trust me I don't dance. Seeing as I had taken a few Valium because I hate flying I was as chilled as anything, so posed no threat. The first letter I then realised was for me to have my say.
Actually it was Guriba - I think he was called - a Hungarian chap who came on NSC who finally translated it for me.
I think the fine was about £80 but they could whistle for that.

So I probably will steer clear of the place just in case I get flagged up if I went back.

Funniest thing was my missus shouting out "He's free, he's free, when I walked into baggage reclaim as if I had just done a twelve year stretch.

And that's the whole truth and nothing but the truth  very mundane.

See above spence.

That's a great story. Because you said i believe it but you could easily think it's so stupid that it was made up. Lovely stuff.

Now days you would get an on the spot fine ? I heard the police in France would escort you to a cash machine. Whether that's true or not i don't know.

They do for driving offences.

If you are in Budapest for several days its worth a trip down to Lake Balaton any of the resorts are great and easy to get to on the train, got absolutely wasted on quality white wine for less than £5. I love Budapest been a few years now but started going out there for the Grand Prix via the Becketts Irish Pub coach trips wonderful days.

That's a bit disturbing, my missus and I go to a different European city each year - last two have been Berlin and Budapest, both great - and this year we are going to Tallinn!
