I guess the difference is that we were picking our strongest test team against a far superior opposition, this isn't the strongest team that the WIndies could have selected.

That's a fair point although the sense of mismatch and inevitability of result is the same. Their series record over recent years makes for ugly reading. The only series they've won since 2012 are against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. That's P11 W0 D1 L10 against the proper teams.

And prior to beating NZ in 2012 they'd won just 1 series in 9 years against a proper team (England - 2008/09).

At this trajectory you can see Ireland beating them in a test before this decade is through.

'Tea', Day Two

West Indies 13-1 (9 overs), trailing by 502

A good wicket for Jimmy, pity about the drop by Stokes in the gully off Broad, a life for Powell on 2.

Apparently there is a bit of rain on the radar, which would be a pity - the evening session under the lights should be a real tester.

I agree, they weren't much better when they had Bravo, Gayle etc in their team either. What I do find disappointing about the WIndies is that talent like Jofra Archer is getting away. It's a mess and until they sort out the internal politics it's only going one way.

Off for rain.. West Indies 44-1 (16 overs)

Umpires out there under brollies as the extended covers go on.

Not looking promising.

7.45pm Update from Miller at the ground: "The Hollies Stand are singing merrily in the rain, but the weather looks utterly minging. The covers are glistening to the hammer of raindrops - the lights really do let you see how wet it is out there" :nono:

Play abandoned for the day... West Indies 44-1, trailing by 470.

Pity that the best bit of the day/night game was lost today... and they could have played this morning too :nono:

Embarrassing for World Cricket that this labelled as a Test Match when a Second Division County Side would make more of a fist of this than the West Indies.

Root proving to be a much bolder Captain than Cook, mind you your bowlers should still be OK having only bowled 47 overs between them! Could be over in three days (& nights)...

I fancy Cook would have enforced the follow-on too, but the signs for Root are good. We'll find out more about Root's captaincy in the Ashes.

This shouldn't be considered as an International Test Match, Derbyshire or Glamorgan would have shown more resistance than this mob...

It sadly time for the West Indies to have their test status reconsidered. The youth on those islands seem to crave basketball & 'soccer'. The current squad are shaming their legend predecessors and should stick to 20-20 or one day cricket. Very sad and not a lot to celebrate from an English point of view with such poor opposition.

It is a shame what's happened to WI cricket. Their talent pool has been stolen by other sports, their board is in turmoil, key players 'retire' due to disagreements, others prefer T20 cricket, and you have a Caribbean T20 tournament at the same time as the WI tour England. Terrible situation for a once mighty cricketing nation.

Kind of flat feeling winning that. The WI cricket administrators need to sort this out asap.
