Not sure. Birmingham tried to by a Nigerian player and failed to get the work permit.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40950438

Nigeria international Ogenyi Onazi has been denied a work permit to play for English Championship side Birmingham City.

Birmingham had agreed terms with the 24-year-old to sign him from Turkish club Trabzonspor.

However the Football Association turned down a first application for a work permit for Onazi last week.

An appeal made by the club was rejected on Wednesday despite Onazi being a regular in the Nigeria national team.

Despite appearing in over 80% of the national team games, Onazi failed to earn a permit after the FA considered the West African nation's world ranking in the past two years.

They are ranked 38th in the August 2017 ranking, but Nigeria finished 54th on aggregate over the past two years.

"He'd have been a real quality signing for us," Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp told BBC WM 95.6. "Before that, we lost out on Emmanuel Agyemang-Badubadou from Udinese. He's gone to Turkey for a fortune. Now we've lost Onazi too.

"It's because the country are out of the world Top 50 rankings. Nigeria have dropped to 54th, which stops you getting the permit. If they had been inside the Top 50, it wouldn't have been a problem."

Thank Goodness Ghana are just in the top 50!

Could be close then.

I'm glad the club are thinking outside the box in this transfer window, i was worried we'd be buying over the hill mercenaries when we went up, this bloke and Izquierdo give us much needed pace in attack, i'm excited.

Brighton fans are mental. General consensus on this lad who really has done nothing, ever, is pretty positive. Stevan Jovetic, who is wanted by Sevilla, and has played for Inter, Man City and Fiorentina and has a one in two scoring rate at international level. Most people not interested.

It's more that people would find it hard to believe that we are seriously in for him i suspect. It is easier to get excited about targets that seem more plausible.

Club's lawyers will have been all over the work permit situation before us getting anywhere near making a bid and will have advised on the likelihood of it being granted. We wouldn't have proceeded unless the chances were very high. Harry, on the other hand, probably called the Nigerian from pay as you go mobile, offered him tax free cash in a Monaco bank account named after one of his pets and didn't check with anyone first.

I would think so as he has been playing in Europe presumably with a permit.

I would think so too, but him having a work permit in Switzerland or elsewhere in Europe means squat.

If you want to read something really ****ed up about work permits, look a Efe Ambrose..

http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.u...on_t_be_joining_Blackburn_Rovers_this_season/

BLACKBURN Rovers’ pursuit of Celtic defender Efe Ambrose has ended after his work permit application was turned down. Rovers had made a deadline day loan move for the 28-year-old Nigerian and he been training with the club ever since. However, he is now back with parent club Celtic, and won’t be signing for Rovers this season after he was denied a work permit.

“Not this year, no,” head coach Tony Mowbray said of a move for Ambrose. “The club has worked very hard behind the scenes to try and make it happen, but it’s not going to be happening

So thats a player who got a work permit to play in Scotland, but not in England. The same country!!.

Since then he's proved to be decent in a league that's not very good. How the **** can he suddenly be worth over £10m?

....and he's only just stepped up to the Swiss top league where he's struggling more. Last season in the Swiss second division he was decent !

Excited by this potential signing as he's the one I wanted, would still like to see us bring in another striker on loan though with some decent prem experience.

Am very pleased with this signing. A big well done to the club for getting the deal over the line. It's looking as if we could have quite a pacey front line at this rate, which can only be a good thing given how our first two games panned out. One more striker to go please, and perhaps a midfielder too, and I'll be a happy chappy.

Ropey league but just seen a lot of his goals on a scouting site. He can really finish. Good start. Very left-footed but instinctive.

Maybe we could try "Hey, Raph Dwamena" to the tune of the Macarena.

Seriously?! Let's hope our recruitment team recognised something very special, because this seems like a big gamble.
