Note that Glen Murray does not count as a homegrown player, but Tim Krul does. It is a strange thing this homegrown rule.

Murray doesn't appear to count as home grown as he played non league football until he joined Carlisle at 21. He didn't play for any youth academy and also spent a year playing in America when he was 20/21.

To be home grown you have to have spent at least 3 years, regardless of nationality, with a club associated with the FA or FAW before your 21st birthday.

Tim Krull joined Newcastle at 17 so qualifies as he spent the 3 years with them prior to his 21st birthday.

Never mind any of that - maybe I'm the last to know but: Propper, David Petrus Wenceslaus Henri.
WHAT a name. Must be the first Wenceslaus we've had on our books?

Here we go : Davy Wenceslaus first looked down

At the feet of Stephens

But the ball had gone and with a frown

Davy smacked him one just to make it evens

I thank yew! :drink:

I understand that, but the aim of the rule is to ensure there are players coming through with potential to play for England.
As it is, a team could have 8 players who count as home grown in their squad and none of them eligible for an England call up, and another could have 8 players eligible for England, that started their pro career late and don't count as home grown.
Why not make the rule 8 players eligible for an England call up? This would encourage clubs to look harder at English boys for their academy, before recruiting from outside England.

Completely agree, the rule as it stands isn't fit for purpose. Greg Dyke has said he wants to change it, these changes could include increasing the number of home grown players to 12, of which 2 will have been through the clubs youth system. He's also suggested reducing the qualifying age for home grown players from 21 to 18.

The reduction of the age to 18 is the key one as currently players are not allowed to move across national boundaries until they are 16, meaning a foreign 16 year old wouldn't be able to complete 3 years prior to their 18th birthday. So would never become a home grown player.

Couple of under 21/scholar names I've not seen mentioned...

Mamadou Saliou Koné, 17yo Portuguese defender of Guinean descent who we appear to have signed this season from Benfica.

And Jordan Nando Marques Araujo....Who I can't find any information about whatsoever.

Does [MENTION=1276]AZ Gull[/MENTION] have any info as our resident guru on all things Albion Youth?

Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

I don't know if you "do" twitter, but if you do, and you are interested in news items about the academy, its players and matches, then there is a twitter account dedicated to exactly that. That twitter account tweeted about Araujo signing for the club on August 22nd:-

[TWEET]900133763119697922[/TWEET]

[TWEET]900134061447946240[/TWEET]

Now, full disclosure: I run that twitter account. I would be more than happy to recommend other twitter accounts that cover the Albion academy in great detail, but as I don't know of any, I can't. So, apologies for the advertisement, and if the boss man wants to slap my wrist so be it, but I don't derive any commercial benefit from the account and it is offered to keep fellow Albion fans informed of academy stuff they might otherwise miss. [And, I must add, I was actually flagged about Araujo by another NSC user, and I am very grateful to him for the heads up].

I must admit, I had never heard of Kone before seeing the Premier League squad list.

And no apologies needed whatsoever for the plug - you do a fine job and I know it's greatly appreciated on here. KUTGW! [emoji106]

Some clubs haven't named 25:

http://www.football365.com/news/club-by-club-premier-league-25-man-squads-including-u21s

The most notable absentees from the 25-man Premier League squad lists are here.

From the Premier League’s official website:

‘After the closing of the summer transfer window each Premier League club had until 4pm BST on 1 September to submit a squad list containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the “Home Grown Player” (HGP) criteria.

‘The rest of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be Home Grown.

‘An HGP means a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

‘Changes to the squad list of 25 may be made during the period of a transfer window.

‘Under-21 players are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad.

‘For the 2017/18 campaign Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1 January 1996.

‘Each club squad list is below as well as an additional list of each club’s registered Under-21 players who are eligible over and above the squad limit of 25 players.’
Oh, and a * denotes a homegrown player. Enjoy.

Interesting to note that unless we had Goldson and Krul, we would have had only seven "home grown" players.

....or do the under 21 players count in the required "8" as well ?

Based upon this wording:-

After the closing of the summer transfer window each Premier League club had until 4pm BST on 1 September to submit a squad list containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the “Home Grown Player” (HGP) criteria.

The rest of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be Home Grown.

I take it to mean that a club could name a squad of just 17 non-Home Grown players and they would still be within the rules (ie the rule effectively limits the maximum number of non-HGP players, rather than actually requiring a certain number of HGP). So, to take your question, without Goldson and Krul in our squad, we would have a squad of 23, made up of 16 non-HGP and 7 HGP, which would be fine as there are not more than 17 non-HGP. Of course, what we wouldn't be able to do would be to replace Krul and Goldson with two non-HGP.

Jamie Murphy and Glenn Murray are not asterisked, but are clearly home grown players.

By all accounts not - for Murray anyway. I assume Murphy was North of the border (ie not FA or FAW) so doesn't count either. Seems a strange rule, given this:

Murray doesn't appear to count as home grown as he played non league football until he joined Carlisle at 21. He didn't play for any youth academy and also spent a year playing in America when he was 20/21.

To be home grown you have to have spent at least 3 years, regardless of nationality, with a club associated with the FA or FAW before your 21st birthday.

Tim Krull joined Newcastle at 17 so qualifies as he spent the 3 years with them prior to his 21st birthday.

You are correct. Murphy didn't join Sheff Utd until he was 24, he came through the youth system at Clyde and then Motherwell meaning no association with an FA or FAW club prior to the age of 21.

Blimey. That really is a strange rule. Utterly ludicrous, in fact.
