Another request for enlightenment from NSC.

Heading to Boston (in the Fall) with the missus and an 18 and 16 year old in tow.

Any tips. Must sees? Have done a lot of the US but have never got to Boston.

Hire a car and go to Cape Cod - should be stunning at that time of year.

Boston is an excellent city, stuffed full of sights. Perm any number from Museum of Fine Art, museum of contemporary art, Harvard natural history museum, MIT museum, tea party ships, Paul Revere House, JFK Presidential library, Ted Kennedy Centre, USS Constitution... the list is endless. Walk around Cambridge, walk around Harvard, amble around the leather district (brilliant restaurant there - O Ya), take a boat trip. Drive out to Cape Cod.

Bring the songs of Jonathan Richman to life. Take a drive on route 128, visit the Government center, dance in a lesbian bar.........

Trips to Cape Cod, Marthas Vinyard definately worthwhile. In the city, take the city tour bus (hop-on-hop-off) to see all the best sights. (we sit on it once all the way round, about 2 hours, and then go back to the bits we want to spend time at). You can get a 1 or 2 day ticket wich includes a 45 min boat tour of Boston Harbour. Highlights for us were Fenway Park Baseball Stadium, (Game or no game!) Beer at the 'Cheers' bar next to the Boston Public Garden, Lunch at the top of the Prudential centre overlooking the city, trip on the subway to Harvard university in Cambridge, shopping on Boyleston Street.

+1 to Cape Cod and Hyannis. Dont bother with Plymouth. Salem is an interesting tourist trap very close to some excellent breweries. Do the Harpoon brewery tour, also if you're flying in to Logan use the water ferry if the weather's good - much better views than that horrid tunnel. :)

Worth considering the ferry to Provincetown if you're just going for a day or 2. look at the map, it's a long drive around. Whale watching from Provincetown is amazing. Bike hire good in Provincetown, get out around the sand dunes, beaches.

In Boston, walk the Freedom Trail. 'Boris bikes' type scheme also a good way to get around. MIT and Harvard areas both worth a visit in Cambridge, across the river.

Is the baseball season on then? The Red Sox stadium looked brilliant from the outside - eating and drinking for what, 4 hours, in a sports stadium? Priceless!

Red Sox in a pennant race with the Yankees, so if you can get tickets, the atmosphere will be brilliant. Try Stubhub or another secondary ticket site before you go, this worked for me in getting seats at Baltimore last summer.

Red Sox is a must, as already mentioned. They sing their National Anthem before all sporting events I think, it was something to behold. When I went, I think it was a local girl, she belted it out!

We took a train to Salem. It was out of season, so almost deserted, but they have things relating to the witch trials which are interesting. We were told that Hallow'een there is mental, so not sure if that is when you are going, but might be an idea. According to Wiki - 'More than 250,000 visited Salem over Halloween weekend in 2016'.

The squirrels like taking nuts from your hand in one of the parks there, which is a plus point for me!
