LA...wishing it was devon..
On a info-gathering mission from anyone who has had to source and relocate elderly relatives into assisted living accommodation. Friend needs to find somewhere for her father..... looking LA / Rusty to West Worthing... poss Steyning.
He will have money to buy obv.. but what pitfalls have others found with additional costs or general hidden extras that she needs to think about?
He will need somewhere that has a social aspect to it too.. not just a warden and a buzzer...
Any information greatly received. Thanks chaps and chapesses. K

I dont have any recommendations for the area that you are looking at but I go in to a lot of assisted living places and what I would say is what generally sets one above another is the quality of the manager thats in place. I have been in to some really luxurious ones where they look great but the management couldn't care less about the residents, there is no socialisation and residents remain in their flats. On the other hand I have been to some family basic ones where there is a real sense of community.

Speak to the manager, try to get a feel for if they care about their residents, watch if the residents say hello if as they go past and how warm they are to them. Ask them what activities the residents are involved in and if you can see for yourself if these are well attended. Also look around the building and grounds and see if they are well tended to, a good manager will take great pride in the building and surrounding areas and if there is a good sense of community so will the residents who live there.

My 84 year old mum is living in Birch Tree Court in Worthing which is sheltered accommodation (Is that the same thing?) She's got orange cords all round her flat which she can pull for help, and there's a resident warden on site.. She always likes to say it's next door to Worthing Hospital and an Undertakers - so she can go to either without too much trouble!

She loves it there. They've got a good social scene (there's a communal lounge) and although she's not that mobile her mind is still sharp so she loves the quizzes and such. When I visit the place is always clean and the inmates, sorry residents, seem happy and cheerful.

EDIT: And she's had no problems with additional charges. She rents, and it covers everything. Well it has so far.

EDIT2: And following on from 'half time pies' comment the warden is great. Really approachable, cares about the residents and sorts problems out. Of course they can change, so a good one can be followed by a bad one.
