That is interesting
Im someone who is moving further away from well known branded products and have been buying supermarket " own products" for a while now.
No way am i buying anything but heinz salad cream though no one matches the taste.

Might have to look into aldi if their own products are a superior price match and equal quality supermarket own

First time through the checkout I thought there had been a mistake and I'd accidentally robbed the place!!

I use Lidl for serving soup.

I drive an Aldi.

Both are good.

I use Aldi in Lewes which is a bit small but has everything I need for the weekly shop. Milk, Beer, Cat Food, Wine.
For some reason Lidl just didn't do it for me when wife & I went there. Massive new Aldi just outside Cardiff right next door to Waitrose and it is more like Waitrose than Waitrose with its posh signage.
New store coming soon where Halfords is in Lewes road but not sure if Aldi or Lidl.

Shopping at Aldi instead of Sainos has all but halved my weekly bill.
Sure there's been a few dud buys along the way, but now I'm in the swing of it I'll never go back to Sainos/Tesco et al.

My bill is always less than £1 per item, with no noticeable change in quality.
This certainly used to be true but the major supermarket chains are fighting back strongly and there is now much less difference apart from on the things that Lidl/Aldi specialise in and source for the whole empire - like bratwurst and pickles. Being a Hillian, I shop mainly at Lidl, Waitrose and Tesco and very often things are practically the same price in Tesco as they are in Lidl and sometimes when there is an offer, they are cheaper in the majors - particularly for branded goods; Hellmans Mayo was the most recent example which was cheaper on offer in Waitrose than it was in Lidl. The range in the majors is also obviously much better - I can very rarely do a full shop in Lidl and have to go elsewhere for lots of things - Lidl's range of spices is terrible for example.

I would also disagree with BG's "Top Chef" about the fruit and veg, it can be good but it can also be very poor - the consistency tends to be much better in the big supermarkets with Asda probably being the best for quality and value.

Aldi and Lidl are great. In my experience, the quality is usually better than the other supermarkets. The one I hate with a passion is Waitrose. Not only is it the most expensive (by far), the quality is the poorest of all supermarkets. It seems to survive off the fact that its somehow established itself as the poshest supermarket and many of its snobby customers go there because they think they are too good for the common food offered by the others. I snigger at them as I drive past Waitrose on my way to Lidl.

When's that actually happening? Been talked about for ages but doesn't seem to be anything happening on the site yet

They've started clearing the ground but the gas holder is going to take a while to demolish.

The delay in starting is down to land ownership so a councilor told me, apparently 3 different companies own it so it took ages to get the thing sorted out.

Any top chef worth his salt would also have a reputable buying chain of suppliers where the quality of the goods would be instrumental in the continued business of the supplier. There is also the extra cost of buggering off to the supermarket to buy your goods for a couple of hours against them being delivered to your front door. Wasted unnecessary time if you are running a top catering establishment

He lives in Bearstead Kent and passes a LIDL on his way to work so picks up the veg he wants for his restaurant on his way to work so he told me and I have no reason to not believe him. He says that way he can see what he is buying rather than have it delivered and take a chance.by which time it is too late to cook if its not very good.

Thats fine for him, i suggest he looks at his suppliers if he has problems that make him shop at lidl instead.
but as i said any decent chef will have a good relationship with a good supplier supplying decent fresh goods, if you need to go to lidl you are getting crap suppliers and wasting valuable time in a supermarket when you should be in house concentrating on the business

I love Lidl, with its bargain basement prices, merry haphazardly, and a surprise around every corner. But now there is a new Aldi superstore due to open near me, which will be larger than my local Lidl, and rather more convenient to get to. So should I swap allegiances? Is one better than the other, or are they really much of a muchness?

We have just had a Aldi open up a few weeks ago and i have just done a shop in their 8.45am today, 10 cars in the car park in and out in minutes, nicely laid out, but miserable as F**K staff. If i had gone to lidls i would still be searching and queuing.

So i would give the Aldi a big thumbs up and tell them to get some staff that actually want to be there..

According to the Mid Sussex times. 2019.

It's going to be a big job, replacing the Gas holder and granting road access.

Of course after Brexit they'll both be scurrying back across the channel and we'll be left with:-

FineFare
Key Markets
Liptons
&
Shoppers Paradise.

They are owned by brothers so they are allied together anyway.

The oldest urban myth. Lidl & Aldi have never been connected in anyway. Aldi was founded by two brothers who innitially had taken over the running of their Mothers small grocery store. Adidas and Puma were founded by brothers in the same German town. Puma came into being after the brothers had a huge disagreement that lasted many years, with one leaving Adidas to form Puma. One story, the disagreement started after one brother shut the other out of the shelter during an air raid. Whether that is the truth or bullshit, I have no idea.

I've shopped at both (and can't remember which is which and not sure if there is any difference) but generally, find their fruit and veg is as good and lasts longer than all the other supermarkets.

Shopping at them I have found some great smoked duck pate, pancetta, legs of italian ham, wienerschnitzel, gravlax, almond chocolate together with loads of other stuff. Because I can't tell them apart I can't say who sold which.

Only frustrating thing is they don't have a wide enough range, so have to go to the big supermarkets as well for a weekly shop, but what they do, they do well

I find that the quality of stuff in Waitrose is generally excellent, and that the modest price premium is more than compensated by the quality of the customer experience. I speak only for my local branch, but their recruitment and staff training is very clearly FAR superior to any of the other supermarket chains. They pay enough staff, so that you never queue more than a minute or so, and the staff are unfailingly polite and cheerful (and most often blonde with pony-tails). I'd pay a higher premium frankly.

I don't 'snigger' at those who choose instead, to fight over dented tins out of cardboard boxes on the floor, and then queue for 20 minutes at the one open checkout in Lidl or Aldi, though. Each to their own.
