Suspect the real question is not who'll be next Tory leader but will the party even survive in its current form. The split they've been fending off for years between the right of the party and the rest of them is surely coming in the next couple of years?

Then again, you could say the same of Labour.

Then again, you could say the same of Labour.

You could say all sorts of things about Labour.

Articles from the Independent and Telegraph:-

Wednesday 10 May 2017

Today, Angela Rayner, the shadow Education Secretary, said “watch this space” when asked if a pledge to axe tuition fees would quickly follow.
She “didn’t want to give too much of the manifesto away” on a day when Labour was focusing on its plans to spend billions boosting schools and further education.
Labour enjoys 55 per cent support among students, according to a poll last week. The party appears to be succeeding in a voter registration drive.
In his speech, Mr McDonnell said scrapping tuition fees would help make Britain “radically fairer, radically more equal”, adding: “What do you call that? I call it socialism?”

16 JULY 2017 • 12:44PM

John McDonnell has U-turned on Jeremy Corbyn’s promise to wipe student debt as he said the pledge is just an “ambition”.
The shadow chancellor insisted Mr Corbyn did not promise to pay off student debt despite the Labour leader saying during the election campaign that he would “deal with” the issue.

Pie in the sky and fantasy lie. Add to it the Labour supporting kids/students voting twice (too stupid to know they are being conned but savvy enough to cheat) it kind of reminds me of the spinning lying drivel by Blair, Brown and the remain supporters who deny and frustrate democracy.

And the facts seem to prove otherwise. Sorry to piss on your chips but Labour has neither the moral nor the mental high ground. It appears that statistically, if you vote Labour then you're the thicky.

https://www.spectator.co.uk/2017/05...-or-voters-labour-is-now-the-stupidest-party/

A similar piece of research has recently been done into the link between intelligence and party preference in the 2015 general election, and the results are broadly the same. A PhD student at Nuffield called Noah Carl has used a different data set — the UK Household Longitudinal Survey — to calculate the mean IQ of voters in each of the UK’s 650 constituencies and then looked for patterns in the vote shares for different parties at the constituency level.

He found that there was a positive association between mean IQ and voting Conservative, and a negative association between mean IQ and voting Labour. So the higher the mean, the more likely the constituency was to return a Tory MP in 2015, and the lower the mean, the more likely it was to return a Labour one. Carl also found that the highest association between mean IQ and vote share was with the Lib Dems. All of which is consistent with the findings of Deary and his team. However, Carl also looked at the link between mean IQ and voting Ukip, and while that association was also negative, it wasn’t as negative as it was in Labour’s case. In other words, low intelligence was more strongly correlated with voting Labour in 2015 than it was with voting Ukip. Of the four main parties, Labour definitely attracted the least intelligent voters that year.

No doubt a similar piece of work will be done when the results of this general election are in, and the fact that the Conservatives will attract so many former Labour supporters may lower the average IQ of their voters. But it is unlikely to fall below that of Labour’s. Whether you measure a party’s intelligence by the IQ of its leaders or its voters, Labour is now the least intelligent party.

I remember having a previous discussion with you about this, having myself posted a piece of American research that found that people with lower IQs are more likely to be right wing. As part of our discussion, I admitted that I'd posted it provocatively and that the research was full of holes. I know from reading your other posts, that, whatever your politics, you are intelligent enough to know that the research quoted by Toby Young either suffers from similar gaping holes, or has been cherry picked for political point scoring. Having seen previous evidence of Young's partisan intellectual dishonesty, I suspect the latter.

Anyone with a smattering of education in the social sciences knows that IQ as a measure of intelligence is controversial, subject as it is to cultural bias. If we accept that Young never came across this whilst studying PPE at Oxford, we could probably assume that the son of Michael Young would have picked up some kind of notion of stuff that has been taught on A'level Sociology courses for half a century.

Without going full Ben Goldacre on Young's piece, I would just hope that that the research it is based on talks about the unreliability of IQ testing, the links between class, race, educational opportunity and voting preferences and gives good reason for the author choosing to discuss the mean average, rather than any of the other potential measures. If it doesn't, it's not worth the paper its written on. You know that, and I know that, and we both know that Toby Young knows that. It is measure of the man that, rather than have an honest discussion, he would choose to denigrate those who have not been as lucky with their life opportunities as he was. Something that I find particularly despicable from someone, who until his recent admission of failure, was portraying himself as some kind of champion for the educationally under-privileged, seemingly hiding his more likely personal motive of trying to ensure that his own children didn't have to go to school with any of them.

In typical fashion, Young also lets the mask slip, happy to describe those scoring lower on the IQ test as 'stupider', making a lie of the perverse narrative pedaled by the right that it is the left who are intellectual snobs looking down upon the working classes.

Buzzer, You have shown yourself capable of scoring points of us lefties without the assistance of Toby Young. Don't lower yourself. Even if his invective seems to offer a cheap win, if you can see the obvious holes in it, someone else will.

You're never going to get this mate but what can you do. Luckily it would seem the majority of the British public are no longer believing in the moronic right wing press that Toby Young represents. The Daily Mail and The Telegraph only seak to promote there own owners interests, they will be dead in the water in a few years as there readership gradually die off. Times are a changing where there are so many other ways of finding out the truth and not being spun a web of lies.

Is the Daily Mail not published any more in your world?

They've had women leaders and openly gay people in senior positions for yonks. They've been ready for years. It's the Labour Party that's well behind the times.

Of course it's true Labour hasn't had a woman leader but there were openly gay Labour ministers years before the Tories, for example, Chris Smith, Stephen Twigg and Peter Mandelson. It was the Tories whom introduced the anti-gay Section 28 legislation which Blair then scrapped. And currently 45% of Labour MPs are women, whereas only one in five Conservative MPs are female.

Priti Patel would be a good fit. Mogg is as much a caricature as Boris is, whilst we might chuckle at his extensive knowledge of the English language and eccentric foibles, under the veneer, he is as Johnson is; a deeply unpleasant individual.

Patel hasn't got the intellectual clout needed to be leader. Won't be her.

You even mentioned Daily Mail in there, just for good measure. Brilliant!

You've got nothing to come back with except your own petty prejudices, the obligatory mention of the DM and a very strong belief that ad hominems are valid arguments. Oh, I get it alright.

I'm usually with you on ad hominem attacks but I was at school with Toby Young and I know from personal experience that he is one of the vilest.
