Moeen Ali 50* (81 balls, 4 fours) :clap2:

His conversion rate is impressive... with 10 fifties and 5 centuries... a pretty useful player to have coming in at no.7 :)

England 319-5 (80 overs)

New ball due.

I just love the way Joe plays with a smile on his face. Just brilliant.

Highest score in a first test innings by an England captain
In a pressure situation no less, bloody marvellous

Close of play (18:30), Day one

England 357-5 (87 overs, RR4.10), Root 184*, Ali 61*

Root and Ali added 175 off 35 overs in the final session @ RR 5.00 :clap2:

An amazing turnaround for England from 76-4 (22.3 overs) just before lunch, and what a day for Captain Joe Root. :clap2:

Some turnaround indeed, if we can build this to 450+ i'd feel pretty comfortable about winning this Test.

According to what they were saying on TMS Root finished 9 (I think) short of setting a record for the highest score by a first-time captain on the first day, record currently held by Clem Hill from 1910 (again, I think :D)

7 (Hill was out for 191)

Only 2 captains have scored over 200 in an innings on debut. Chanderpaul 203* in 2005 and Downing for New Zealand in 1968 239.

Kohli has the most runs in a match on captaincy debut with 256 against Australia in Adelaide a couple of years ago. Which was nice.

Bloody HATE my new job. Yeah yeah, it's a lot more money, and 2 hours per day shorter commute, but in my old job I would have been WFH today and watched it all

You're right though but I reckon Root will make 201. But what do I know?

Day two begins with England on 357-5 (87 overs), Root 184* and Ali 61*

Crucial early session with the nearly new ball... SA could get themselves back into it this morning with some quick wickets, or England could take it away from them...
