I know. Some of the stories my ex navy mates tell me when we go down the pub are enough to make your toes curl.
Union Street in Plymouth was unbelievable back in the day when we had a larger navy and many more foreign boats along side, especially when our American friends popped in to town.
It's is sadly an awful dump down that end of Union Street now and the navy/marines hang out in other parts of town as well as Union Street.

Utter bollocks.
A navy without an aircraft carrier is like a gun without ammunition. Every navy in the world invests in carriers because they are that important. The fire power of an aircraft carrier is frightening as it is effectively an air field on a ship. When it works as a carrier group where it is escorted by frigates and destroyers then the fire power is as our colonial friends would say ‘awesome’.

Agreed. Even in my day we had Gatling guns, I think they were called. Being a sparker have no idea of their rate of fire but it was ridiculous. It threw up a wall of steel capable of blocking Exocets and the like. Be a bit silly if the carriers didn’t have at least the equivalent.

Was on board an American carrier, F.D Roosevelt I think when we were in Hong Kong in the early 70s. On the ships noticeboard there was a piece about HK along the lines of 'HK is a historical base for the British Navy for many, many years. Do not drink or fight with them. They will beat you at both 
Also remember an epic brawl in the Texas bar in Lisbon, the night there was a left wing coup against the govt. Actually saw a Dutch Marine (It was RN, Dutch and Canadians against the Septics after some irreverence regarding Royal families), pick up an American and throw him some distance. Marvellous times

Ah sea stories, swing that lantern! Early 70’s was in San Juan on the Rhyl. Big scouser Leccy who’s name escapes me now, was sat drinking with 3 yank Green berets when it suddenly kicked off. Scouse decked all three, nicked their Zippos and walked saying something like,”I’m only a Leccy. You want to see our marines!”
I think it started with that old wind-up of “Why aren’t you in Vietnam?” The answer being,”The Viet Cong seem to be doing alright without us!” Happy days.

We went on the JFK when it was in Naples with us in 75
We were told not to go below 4 deck as they kept having armed robberies on there !!
We got invited up to there PX and it ended up with most of us doing the Zulu Warrior and the dance of the Flaming ********s in there bar
They didn't know what to make of us and when we departed port a few days later after being moored alongside one of their ships they discovered we had painted the side of their ship with ROMFT and RDP etc

I was on the old Ark Royal 64 - 66 the only commission that didn’t go stateside, just my luck. We went to the Far East for 12 months. 9 bunks in a mess deck of 64. I spent most of my time on the upper deck on a camp bed which my hammock could be converted into. Did I tell you about my station leave in Mombasa? We lived in a cave next to Silversands holiday resort! True story.
