So 34 points and an ok goal difference was enough for survival this season, hopefully a similar figure will be enough for us!

North East football does really have a fetid stench about it just now, doesn't it - especially with Newcastle just having spent a year in the Championship.

There was an interesting discussion on the radio a few weeks ago, suggesting that in the future the North East and North West clubs may have to 'base' themselves in the south (ie London) for training purposes etc, to attract foreign talent - and then just fly up north for their fixtures.

I would rather we languished in the lower leagues than stoop that low. I dont think the concern is that high yet though, 1 time in the 3rd tier in our whole existence and that was for 1 season shows that whilst we have gone down this year its not exactly alarm bells yet

As will all of the new top 7, home and away, EACH about about to spend £100m to £250m on new players this summer.

Predictably, we will have to get our 40+ points from the remaining 24 fixtures.

Places 8th to 17th separated by 6 points and each of these 10 teams won 11 or 12 games.

That seems pretty much a marker.

Bournemouth, with a top ten Premier League finish, give hope to all smaller clubs. And Southampton - just above them - do the same for clubs like us.

They've done well but it may surprise people to know that the current squads cost in transfer fees:

Southampton £171m
Bournemouth £89m

With squads packed with players costing £6m to £16m.

So no fairy tales, but the media would have you believe otherwise because of the tiny Bournemouth stadium.

Let's hope the three worst teams next season are as pathetic as the three worst this season.

...and that we're not one of them.

Ought to be able to average a point per game over the season and that at least gives you a chance to stay up.

Fair enough, but do Liverpool fans feel any less entitled to be in the CL?
Yes, I think they do - different sort of feel altogether. Liverpool fans know that although they were once invincible in England, as well as being absolute masters of Europe, they've had years of (relatively!) harder times (but wouldn't most of us love Liverpool's 'Harder Times!'), with various managers trying to get them back to the very top but not quite making it - Rafa, Rodgers, Hodgson, etc.
