That reminds me of my time as a barman at the Hove Park Tavern c1987 and a young lad came in with his girlfriend and trying to impress asked for a glass of Le Piat D'or for her.(It was advertised on tv at the time as something glamorous).

I had to tell him we only had a house white which was standard for pubs at the time. The look of disappointment - felt really sorry for him in his quest to impress.

I got a free case of Le Piat D'Or from P&O Ferries a couple of years ago as a "bonus" of booking a Dover- Calais crossing. I think the box is still sitting in my garage now (I did wonder if I might use it for some sort of beef & red wine stew, but had largely forgotten about it until now).

I just don't like averagely priced Australian white wines, they make nice reds and pudding wine, but I much prefer French Chardonnay, even basic Bourgogne White is superior to any Aussie white below £20.
However, It sounds as if no one has tasted Greek Retsina or most other Greek wine they sell in tavernas, I also had a brown jug of Cretan village wine once, trust me, it is all truly awful and makes cheap Aussie white wine taste like nectar.
A good friend is a wine expert, he has opened some bottles of Aussie white that were very nice, but I guess you have to know what you are doing.

Has anyone ever drunk any of these makes? Horrible taste and as far removed from any half decent French wine for less than a tenner as is possible to be.

Can we not just
Ban these makes on the grounds they are the McDonald's of wine. !

I meant hardy's

You're clearly too tight to buy the decent Jacobs Creek then.

Hi, i'm working class.

Me too.
I get really fed up with wine and beer snobs who look down on people whose taste buds are not as "sensitive/educated " as theirs.
I like wine and usually drink an Italian red in a carton ( €2.45 a litre) which is our local supermarket's own label.
I suspect many people, in a blind tasting, couldn't differentiate between a vin du pays and a chateau bottled that is 4 times the price.

I don't consider myself a wine snob. I'd probably struggle to differentiate between various wines across the spectrum. But I do know Blossom Hill tastes like cat piss. That's not snobbery, it's just the fact that it's truly disgusting.

Just like coffee, it all tastes the same.

Said that to the publican (or something similar) at the Exchange in Hove before a match once, something along the lines of (it's all the same) when he asked what i would like, his face  thing is i was going to a Brighton game and wanted to get slightly drunk, not enjoy a beer as such-

Any way i digress,i'm no wine buff, connoisseur, snob, critic or whatever,i normally drink white but will rotate red once in a while and yes i can taste burning embers, lemon grass and daisy flowers with the best of them.

In short a bottle of wine under a fiver is either battery acid or grape juice,i fine i need to spend £7 to £15,although it's more £7 as i don't drink lots, also a good (excuse the spelling) chatue nerf du pap is as good as a madam of patris in my book or was that the other way around?

Give me a glass of Port any time.

Apologies to any Grammar Police and Wine extraordinaire's for this outburst.

Whilst I do tend to spend a good bit more than quoted on red wine, I defend anyone on their choice.

In the same league as music, film or TV, a personal choice is a personal choice. I may not agree with someone liking X or Y, but I would defend their right to an opinion and equally would not expect my taste in such fields to be criticised, simply analysed.

Be a dull world if we all liked the same thing.

If you like something, enjoy it.

Anything else you want banned simply because you don't like it?

Pretty much all the big wine brands we see in the UK are made to hit supermarket price points. And those price points have barely moved in recent years.

You might wonder how that's achieved, given that duty goes up most years and so do most other costs facing the producers. The currency shift this year is another factor that should have resulted in a big price hike.

The brutal truth is that the quality of the wine, in most cases, is getting worse. Remember £2.16 of whatever you spend on a bottle of wine is duty. Then there's VAT, transport costs, raw materials, retailer margin etc etc. Most quality wine retailers these days are honest enough to say that an entry-level price point is £8 or £9, and many don't bother at all below £10.

Fair enough, some people only really want a sugary viscous liquid that is 13% alcohol. But for anyone who's interested in finding out why so many people find wine such an amazingly interesting subject - a beverage designed entirely around human pleasure but with all kinds of links to history, geology, human culture, agriculture, chemistry and much else besides - paying a little bit more from a specialist retailer does pay dividends. And it matters not a jot what kind of background you come from.

What was the landlord when you were there, Graham the Geordie, Bryan the Scot or the second Graham?

I know there are bargains out there,i know a Fiat Panda is not a BMW 7 series, but let's face it you can have fun in both to some degree and you can get from A to B,both have merits,BMW gets you there quicker,Panda can be squeezed through tight narrow streets and you don't care where you park it..

So,with all this in mind-what is the minimum (best) price for a bottle of wine and is there any difference in £100 bottles as opposed to £500 bottles?

Of course a £5 bottle of wine isn't going to be much cop but these days it will at least be drinkable, going back 30 years it might as well have gone in your cars battery.

On the other hand my palette can't tell why a bottle of wine is priced at £100 plus, as soon it goes past £20 then I'm done.
